it'll only work once.. Once your bombs are gone you are stuck at zero altitude with no room to manouvre.. I'd rather stay high, get rid of the bombs so as to further increase speed, and rely on my gunnery skills to fend off a pursuing fighter..

If your flying a bomber, you don't have any manuverabilty anyway, at any altitude. My favorite ride is the SBD, and the best place to be in it is on the deck. Bandits can't get under you to attack you from your underbelly, where the SBD's is most vulnerable. I learned this trick from the After Action reports found at cv6.org.

In one of the reports, the pilot stated that after the squadron released and pulled out of their dive attack on the CV's at Midway, they leveled out about 50 ft above the water and egressed out between the escort ships. They formed back up quickly at this low altitude and continued away from the IJ fleet. The IJ CAP pilots did make passes at them, but didn't seem to be interested in pressing home their attacks. Apparently, having several pairs of .30's firing at them from the SBD's rear seat didn't set well with the Japnese pilots.

When I was with CVG-12 our VB squadron employed this technique with reasonable success.

Ive used this trick for fun a few times. Its usually when flying a fighterbomber like a bombed up p47, when you know you have to dump your payload to turn and fight. If the bombs are getting dumped anyway, try and sucker the attacking a/c into a stern chase, then dump the bomb at 50meters(ish) so that the bomb doesnt skip. Also, if you can drag the chase nap of the earth over hills it works a lot better. Simply sling your bomb into the crest of a hill just as you go over. The chasing aircraft gets it full in the face (if you time the delay and distance right). Can produce some good comedy moments, but wouldnt really recommend it as a defensive tactic, more for laughs.

A few years ago my Corsair squadron was doing a lot of ground pounding. We got pretty good at skip bombing, but a train of Corsairs on a bombing run proved to be dangerous to anyone who wasn't flying the lead. We ended up flying a pattern around the target area and rolled in one by one as the CO called for us. Pilots that had already dropped their A/G ordnance either circled high as a CAP or flew parallel to the line of attack in order to act as a decoy for the AA fire.

This was actually practiced as a real technique by RAF Buccaneer pilots in the 1980s!

Actually back in the ubi server, there was a server run by LTF, and he had that Pe-8 in there. with a 6 second delay i was able to blow up all oncoming and trailing aircraft just by my intuition. However, some people did not understand the whole bomb delay, and were calling me a cheater. It ended up to be that i was shot at and rammed while i was still on the ground, even by my own teammates. It was funny to me that i got everyone so frustrated that they would intentionally brake the universal no vulching and no shooting friendlies rules.
