New "Atolls" campaign for DCG users
#1

as i had several people asking about my new DCG "Atolls" campaign using the fairly new "Atolls" mod map by Spain and Belgium... i've uploaded it to my personal Combat Arms Squad site for now. this is only a temporary upload, until i can figure out where the campaign really ought to be for final, long standing placement. my site is a FreeForums site and so i cannot say how much downloading bandwidth they will allow...should be unlimited, or so they say...but you know how FREE stuff goes, eh? anyway, i hope to have a more permanent home for Atolls shortly and will update this thread at that time.

things you will need:

IL21946 fully patched to last 4.09 version.
AAA UI 1.1 or higher.
DCG 3.39 or 3.40 or higher.
Atolls map by Spain and Belgium..available right here on the AAA site.

and this South West Pacific "Atolls" Campaign file, naturally:

Note: Something i forgot to put in the README.txt...this campaign is setup to play as a "daily" grind combat effort so DCG should be set on NORMAL time which is a mission taking place every day. certainly you can fly in on faster time settings...but if you do...you'll miss out on many IMPORTANT events taking place in the combat zones. just set it (DCG) to normal time and you'll not miss those events. it should take roughly thirty days or so to complete...though with DCG you can never call it exactly (could be more or less.) sorry for the oversight in the README.

the campaign works completely as a regular DCG third-party campaign. read the included README.tx for more information. it is actually intended to specifically be a semi-fictional US Army Air Force campaign, though i have also included files that will allow you to fly as a US Navy carrier pilot and also a RAAF P-40M pilot---just for added flavor. again, read the readme for more info.

this is a "for fun" could-have-happened campaign...not to be taken serious other than similar incidents surely "did" occur in the war at isolated and nearly forgotten posts and stations...also the planes and units are historical as are the nearby "mentioned" locations and squadron stations. there are MANY aircraft, naval units, ground based forces at play during this campaign---it is a real fight to the finish by all elements concerned, and i hope it will be exciting to everyone that tries it. as in real life, the "suddenly" attacked Allied units are caught offguard and outnumbered...intense air, sea and ground conflict takes place and there are many opportunities for scoring victories...but as the battle grinds on and the massive Allied supply chain funnels more and more precious supplies and men into the area, whereas the Japanese cannot...the Japanese grow weaker and weaker, and chances for kills become less and less frequent. though right up until the final battle the enemy never quits and if not careful you can quickly and easily end up on the "wrong" end of a Zero!

a lot of testing went into this campaign and i think i worked out all of the kinks, but there are and were limitations caused by both IL2 AND DCG... both have bugs on occasion. i can't do much about that...but if you find an obvious mistake that "i" made, let me know and i'll try to fix it and upgrade the whole she-bang.

there is also (soon coming) a Japanese version of this campaign...and a US Navy Night Figher version for you fly-in-the-dark chaps! will post up asap.

constructive comments about Atolls and suggestions/ideas (for the next campaign) appreciated.

thanks for your interest.

Salute!

Beowolff

this is "not" a Spain Belgium campaign project... they made the nice little map. i don't personally know anything else about them. sorry. but i do hope they make some more nice maps!

as to uploading here...i don't know how! d'oh! can someone point me in the right direction?

as to mis4today, i'm not a member there...though i suppose i can sign up to be one.

thanks for the comments, chaps! let me know if everything is working okay. it takes a ton of effort to do these things, and is SO easy to screw something up or overlook something. many times i broke something trying to fix something...if you know what i mean. also so many in's and out's it's so easy to just "forget" to do something needful. i "think" everything is perfect, but i know that it's probably not 100 percent. if you find anything obviously wrong, let me know and i'll do my best to fix it for you.

I think to have something hosted here you have to first upload it to filefront then PM the link to one of the admins.

It is no problem to upload your campaign at Mission4today, they have a special download section for modded campaigns and uploading files is quite easy. You just have to register first.

Beowolf,

If people need help or have issues, I can help you out. They can in the DCG guide thread or maybe PM me or something. Anyway, I am offering my services in case users have issues getting it to run.

your choice, Mate. Big Grin i tried it both ways. with ships remain sunk, the campaign stretchs out longer (usually) as supplies don't reach either side as fast as they normally would. but in my final tests, i finally decided to let the ships spawn on...which "seemed" to move the ground battles along better and also gave some of the light bombers and attack aircraft more targets. your choice though.

i DO strongly recommend NO TRANSFERS be checked, this keeps the planes in the proper places. also, NO AIRSTARTS checked, and DELAY STARTS checked, as that allows AI buddy flights to start up AFTER you've taken off the field. also, as there are many aircraft in the campaign, i recommend only ONE flight per squadron...at least until you see how it's going...to prevent overcrowding the airfields. Also, unless you like flying blind at night, i recommend DAY with custom start and end times as you'll miss a lot of ground and sea action if you fly at night. last thing... i "strongly" recommend ONLY "NORMAL" time passage in the DCG control. faster time will work in the campaign, but you'll miss out on a lot of important events and messages. the campaign was built as a DAY BY DAY, grind the enemy down sort of action. that's it...hope you enjoy it.

Finally got a chance to check this one out and I've run into problems. I've already PM'd Scharnhorst to take him up on his offer to help out but thought I"d post here as well. This is what I've basically sent to Scarnhorst:

I first downloaded Beowolff's Atolls Night campaign and then realized it was only night flying which doesn't appeal to me so I then found that he had an Atolls campaign that was during the day. I installed that one also. I just went to try it out and can't find it listed. I saw the Atolls Night campaign listed but not the Atolls one. Thinking that there may have been a conflict I deleted the Night one, and just to make sure, reinstalled all the Atolls files again into my DCG folder and copied the Dgen files into the Dgen folder within IL-2. Yes, I also made sure to select the Optional 3rd Party Data Folder within DCG and point it to the Atolls folder and selected the allcampaigns.dcg file within. Started up IL-2 again and created a new career and still don't see the Atolls campaign. I'm at a loss to know what I've done wrong. I mean I did the exact same thing as I did with the Night version and that showed up fine but I can't get the Atolls day version to show under any country. Any ideas? So if someone knows what stupid blunder I've done I'll appreciate the help greatly! Thanks.

Has anyone else had any trouble playing this one? For some reason, even with Scharnhorst's help I can't get IL-2 to see it. Other campaigns, both in DCG and in Dgen, work fine just not this one. I'm perplexed to say the least. I've downloaded it twice, reinstalled DCG and nothing seems to make a difference. Thanks for any help you guys may be able to provide.

Nice campaign... I'm in, nearly made ace before being taken out by AAA on a strafing run. Now back to gunnery sargent. Flying P39Q for US Army, fun stuff!

Avatar, you have all the necessary add-ons, and specifically the Atolls map? Also check the DCG for Dummies guide. It helped me immensely to get Atolls working by just simply learning how DCG works.

PS: I like how the waypoints in this campaign work to get you into the target area correctly. I have played other DCG campaigns where the waypoints lead you off to nowhere, only to bring you back into the fray... though by that time you could be in the air for hours. This campaign does not have any of those issues!

Yes, I have the map and it wowrks. As I stated in my initial post I can get the night version to work but not the day! I know how to install campaigns and can even read directions pretty well Wink but for some reason I just can't get this one to work, which bums me out. I have no interest in the night version so I was excited to fly this one but can't get IL-2 to see it for some odd reason. Thanks for the suggestions anyway. Enjoy for me! Smile
