Images of Spanish Landscapes with New Textures
#1

The Spanish Civil War remains an obsession I suppose. I tried making some new textures that would simulate more or less the apocryphal red earth landscape of Spain. Naturally there are all sorts of landscapes in Spain, ranging from forest greens, to flat sand coloring and everything in between. But still - it's the atmosphere and feeling that sometimes counts for more ... so I tried to get dark browns and red earth coloring in, without going overboard and still trying to show cultivated fields that do have to produce green colored crops of one sort or another.

Anyway, I used the old dlc SpainSW map to try the textures out. The map is the only one that I ever found featuring Spain. It is sadly with only 2 towns and airfields, no roads or railroads, no other villages or towns or such. So as a map of Spain, it is a bit incomplete, but that's how it goes. The geography of the map on the other hand is very nicely done, with lots of mountain ranges, hills and valleys.

I tried a number of variations using new textures I made from satellite images and here are a few results, just to hear the opinion of others. Most screen shots are at dawn or dusk - a very colorful time of day. The aircraft in the shots are of no importance.

Maybe it might be an idea to continue work on this map, by adding cities, towns, roads and airfields? The map could be a little gem in the rough, just awaiting polishing.

I have this map and as you said it's got real promise. Your textures look very good. If there is no problem with dlc I'd like to see continued work on this map. One or two more airfields would be nice along with roads and a rail line.

It's not a map I made myself, this is a map from about a year ago previously posted by someone else. I'm just trying to make some new textures for the map, something that better reflects the feeling and look of Spain. The textures are from satellite photos of that region more or less.

Anyway it covers SW Spain, the coast and a bit inland. There are only 2 coastal cities and airfields on the map, Carthagena and another whose name escapes me at the moment. There are a few villages in it as well, but all very small. No roads either.

But the terrain itself is very mountainous, with lots of hills and plains. makes for great flying.

Since this is the only map of Spain I've ever found, I have this thing about trying to make into something just a bit more polished. The original textures were just a tad too drab. But hey, making a map itself is no mean feat at all. So hats off to the original designer.

I'm just trying to add a little extra spice by updating the look.

Ahh, Cartagena map! I heard about it a long time ago, but can't find any links to download.

Anyway, your texture work looks very good for that zone. For the Ebro zone, once I showed to an SCW veteran an I-16 flying over a Slovakia map, and he was totally sure that was the middle of the Ebro, where the battle took part.

So you know, for Ebro, 4.09's default Slovakia map has some similar appeal Smile

Here are a few (ground) photos of battlefields in Spain. They give at least a bit of an idea of how terrain looks.

On the Slovakia map, I'd say it probably most resembles (apart from the villages) the Teruel front, where there was serious and bloody fighting in the winter months. Teruel is surrounded by mountains in the high 2000 meters and hence very cold and snowed in. Maybe that would be a good approximation for the Slovakia map. It's also very wooded around Teruel.

For the Ebro itself here is a photo of the destroyed and preserved village of Roden and somewhat to the south another photo of Belchite, another destroyed and preserved village/town. You'll notice the predominately reddish colored earth and houses.

A last 2 photos is of the Monegros or Aragon front, north of Zaragoza, south of Huesca. This is where George Orwell served for several weeks as a Spanish Republican volunteer until being wounded in February 1937. You can read his account in the beginning of 'Hommage to Catalonia' wher he describes the village of Alcubierre.

These photos are of the landscape around the now restored 'Orwell Trenches' in the Monegros - a predominately dark greenish landscape, while just some dozens of kms to the south, the landscape becomes barren and reddish-grey colored.

As you can see, landscapes in Spain vary considerably from extreme to extreme. Hence the beauty and allure of the country.

We have got some VEEEERY good elevation data and we sure could use and appreciate a texture designer.

Loved those Belchite pictures! I like to see that in our country there are a lot of separate and small efforts to recover our history.
