New default skin MOD???
#1

Hi.

Cannot find the new default skin mod by Vpmedia. I've installed UI 1.1 and need to set the default skins, so that I dont get the old and boring skins, set by Oleg and company...

VPmedia has removed all his work from AAA later a conflict with a strange rule here about forbidding links to other websites... :?

It's a pity.

It's actually fairly easy to make your own default skins. In a nutshell, all you need are sets of 4 .tga files (one renamed .tgb, but it's still a tga) with alpha channels. The 4 files are different sizes for different LODs. The alpha channels are for transparency. These files would go into a folder structure something like this:

\MODS\-name of mod-\3do\Plane\-name of plane, including nationality-\-season-

example:
\MODS\B17F\3do\Plane\B-17F(USA)\summer

Let me know if you want a full explanation of how to do all this.

Actually BomberBoy I would love a detailed explanation. If I get it right for one a/c I am sure I can do the rest.

So lets say I want to replace the Bf109 F2s.

I take the blank skin I want as default from a bmp file, then save as tga?

Step by step if you have time, (I am a virgin....)

Belay that! Combination of what you said and vpmedias files - it works! Thanks.

I would actually very much like to hear how this works - I think I understand everything but the specifics of the filenaming scheme (i.e. are the seasons and nations abbreviated a certain way, etc.) and the .tga/.tgb bit), and for me to just play around with things until it works is very dangerous. If you could enlighten me, BomberBoy (or anyone else), that would be much appreciated.

The reason being, Filefront closes today, and I'm not sure I'll be able to get vpmedia's skin mod in time due to my terrible connection at home. Or, alternately, if someone could up the skin mod to another site somehow, that would be just as grand (but knowing the *.tga trick would still be nice).

Many thanks in advance.

OK guys, it's extremely simple... I'm assuming you already have the skinmod installed, so this is just for making new defaults-

start the game, and go to QMB. then, select the plane you want, and set the skin you want to be its default.

Then, alt+tab out of the game

Go to your Il2 game folder, and go to "paintschemes", and then "cache". inside will be a bunch of .mat files and folders. find the folder with the name of the plane you want to change.

open it, and there will be 4 files: "skin1o.tgb, skin1o.tga, skin1p.tga, and skin1q.tga"

copy all 4 files

go to your MODS folder, and find your skinmod folder. open it- go to 3do, then plane, and then find the plane folder you want to change. *note- some planes have more than one folder, with (multi1) or a nationality abbreviation after the plane name. The nationality ones will only change the default skin for that specific country. The (multi1) changes the skin for all other nationality.

Inside each of these folders, there will be any of 3 folders: "summer, desert, and winter"

"summer" changes the skin for european and any other "summer" maps

"desert" changes the skin for pacific and any other "desert" maps

"winter" changes the skin for winter maps

paste the four files from the "cache" folder into whichever folder you want, depending on your preference.

Hope that helps!

Indeed... the skinmod IMO is one of the things that I first saw from here that made me want to look at mods.

Jackpack, - if you're still around I'd like some help with this skinmod. I got it from Vpmedia's home page,.. so it was not hard to find,.. but getting it to work.. now thats different story..

I did everything and placed the files in the appropriate folder.. but its not detecting that MODS folder.. it has no effect.
Do I need some special Mod enabler program to get this to work? How does Il-2 know about the MODS folder and to look in there? Whatever it is,.. its not 'enababled', so the default skins I want to change... remains the same..

Sad

as far as I'm aware the AAA UI already includes the skinmod ->
(The link is inoperative)
therefore I did not uploaded it again as a single install...

there are a bunch of premade skinpacks at my filefront page but gimme a little time and I will unify them into one single pack which will upgrade up to a 100 types and will be easier to install and requires no additional interactions by the user

cheers

forgot to mention but theres a skin package for the 4.09 final:

http://www.mission4today.com/index.php? ... ls&id=3761

Quote:New default skins pack for 4.09m

Historical notes:

All skins were made to represent aircraft common for the Eastern Front. This means camouflage patterns, camouflage colours and theater-specific markings. Previously present specific markings not connected to the Eastern Front were deleted (such as the blue markings of JG 54 on the Fw 190 A-9 and the red-yellow tailband of JG 301 on the Ta-152H).
