Increased visbilty distance to 15000 meters, it's the about the same distance like the smallest LOD and i improved the effect a little bit.
For the ships you can use the default white or the new black/grey smoke, readme how to use to white smoke included in the folder, i prefer the grey version .

I would think in the Mods folder, but it's best to check and make sure ...

I'd increase the sight distance a bit though. when a smoking abject, for example a ship, is far away the first you'll see is the smoke, and when it comes closer you can see the ship too.
