USAF-KOREA pilot skins WiP
#1

Here is my first attempt to illustrate Korean War, USAF pilots...
Thanks to PeterD and his Sabre Mod!
After just one day researching, I've got 3 summer outfits, featuring:
Detailed, khaki drill or olive drab overalls with dark blue, thin summer, flight jacket.
Accurate for the period life jacket, back type parachute and harness and anti-g suit.
I also detailed the oxygen mask a bit and added leather rim to the flight helmet.
(I have some work to do still, to align the pilot faces perfectly.but I'm too tired right now).
Hope you like them...

Did some more research, yesterday...
Some corrections have been made and the summer suits are near completion. (and release)
The new helmet and mask skin, still needs some superdetailing to be fine by my standards.

Great pilots elephant, can't wait

Just to let you know blue flight jacket at this time were L-2a, B-15 there are repros but they are 99% accurate, hope it helps. Plus the A-2 was still in use by some pilots as well as L-2.

Thanks a lot stu!
I have tons of era photos as reference.
The LW is my real expertise so I may make some mistakes on the names of the USAF garments, but I try to make the outfits 100% historic.
I have seen photos of the A2 worn too...
The next step is to superdetail the helmet, mask, A8 goggles template.
I'll send it too you as soon as it's finished...

Hi,

10/10 amazing detail. If at all possible could you do one pilot wearing a USN G-1 jacket as there were quite a few navy and marine pilots flying with the USAF in Sabre units. They used USAF kit but often still used there navy issued jackets,

Dark brown leather with fur collar?
Sometimes they used Navy issued Mae Wests too...
like the ones featured in the "The Bridges at Toko-Ri", 1954 movie...
sorry can't remember the official name now
I have seen them in lots of photos and wondered why these guys wear different style life vests!
They are on my to do list definately.

I imagine the A-2 Leather jackets had fallen outta favor by then and NOMEX was all the rage, even though most of the jackets were being made with Nylon shells.

Hope you can post the finished ones soon. I'm lousy at making pilots. How do you do it?

Hi BAD_GRANT,

the A-2 was still around in plenty of numbers during Korea and was prefered by some pilots in summer months. Here's a pic of the back of my fav A-2 with Sabre artwork on the back.

Cool Stu. Thanks. I have an A-2 I got back for Christmas of '90 right before my wife got deployed for Desert Shield/Storm. Good jackets.

Wanted to paint my F-15E on it with it's combat record, but alas, I could not find good paint or an artist to do it.

No I'm not a pilot; I was it's Dedicated Crew Chief.

89-0488. 12 combat missions.

You'll notice in that first pic whose got his hands buried in the guts of the plane.

The pilot in the second pic looks like a pilot I used to serve with.
