Good to see this beauty taking form. An attempt was made back in the beggining of FB history by J.Pedrao (the guy who made the Jug), but dunno if it wasn't approved by Oleg or just scrapped by the author.

I know the D.520 served in north africa, does anyone know if there were any desert variants of this plane?
I mean with a special radiator or something of the sort. And for thoose Dewoitines wich served in axis countries , were there any Damlier-Benz powered Dewoitines?

About the desert variants : Not that I know of. Used to have this great special issue magazine on the Vichy Air Force with lots of pictures and details about the operations between 1940-1942, but somehow lost it
My guess would be that if no arrangements were made to keep the dust out of the airframe, the planes would have been very prone to jammings and breakdowns of all kind. They were notorious for this even in temperate conditions.
Never read about a DB powered Dewoitine either, though there might have been attempts with all the planes being used by LW flight schools.
Per, we beg of you, please give us something, just a small teaser, we need our fix

I see, well the Bulgarian pilots managed to install a 30mm cannon on the Dewoitine to give the B-24s and B-17s something to think about so I was thinking ,why not a Damlier-Benz engine?
Maybe when this is finished there could be a version with a 30mm cannon and a what if one with a Damlier-Benz engine, cause the Dewoitine had an old Gnome Rhome engine (I think..) so I find the fact than nobody ever thought about improving the engine rare, specially the Bulgarian pilots wich were "cheated" by their goverment and forced to use the old little Dewoitines against the fast and deadly Lightnings and Mustangs. Maybe some of our AAA bulgarian chaps could tell us if there were any of theese improved Dewoitines.

I think the question should be 'could it be done' rather than 'was it done'. Maybe the D.520 just couldn't be fitted with a DB engine because it couldn't fit in or would have messed up the flight performances...

The D.520 had a Hispano-Suiza V-12 engine.
The same engine that Klimov built under liscense, and modified for use in the Yak and LaGG series of fighters.
Daimler Benz engines, as those used in Messerschmitt products have an inverted configuration (the cylinders point down) and to mount an engine like this in the D520 would require a significant redesign for mounting as well as making it impossible to mount a weapon that fires through the prop hub.
Modifications like this would make very little sense due to the availability of Bf-109's.
