WINDOWS VISTA AND MODS
#1

I have Windows Vista. Even as an administrator, it will not allow me to download version 0.6 of the mod installer (? Whatever it is, I got there by starting to install the engine sound mod) into my IL2 folder. It says that I don't have permission that I have to contact the administrator. I AM the administrator.

What do I do to get around this? I want to install new sounds, engine sounds and other mods to IL2 1946. I'm sick of the planes sounding like manic lawnmowers, etc.

None of my other IL2 games would even work with Vista...at least 1946 does.

Thanks,
BDD

Right click the file or .exe and choose "run as administrator".

You have to change the permissions for the folder. Include yourself as having full permissions - not only as administrator but as your login as well. This will enable you to make changes and save as well.

Good luck

I had Problems with the UserAccountControl (or however its called in the english version Wink), it allowes foe example not to change .ini files without asking if it is ok. I disabled it and now I had no troubles. Try this out.
Good Luck

moved to proper forum section ...

now, i'm running IL2 1946 full modded on Vista 64 ultimate without problems

... make sure that you switch UAC off ( user account control) and that you have administrators rights as logged user so there is no limitations with managing program files folder . You can also modify local security policies ( control panel \ administrative tools) and grant more access rights to your user account

I had major problems with Il2 on vista, both with and without MODS.
Vista took it upon itself to decide when it would allow my to modify files and also for some reason randomly deleted stuff like my il2fb.exe and the version switcher when i installed it. It then decided to mess around with hyperlobby when i started flying online.

One thing I did wich I found helped a lot was to edit the amount of control Vista had over the files. Right click on your game root folder, hit properties and then the security tab. You can then deny your system from editing these files and take ownership for yourself. Make sure you apply any settings you use to all files and subfolders too

Thanks for the replies.
I have modified the user for the 1946 folder so that anyone other than administrator also has full permissions. Then I downloaded the files into my 1946 folder. This morning I noticed no change in the game so I went into the folder and clicked on each compressed file downloaded and they loaded within the folder (after I said it was ok to do). These are not in any folders...they are just within the general IL2 1946 folder if that's where they belong.
I downloaded V 0.6 of the sound installer and the wrapper file, one other similar file that is on the same page, the dive sounds and one other file. These are the sounds that are in the sounds download section right now. When uncompressing the files and the DOS looking menu screen came up I always clicked on the V0.6 version.

The only change I notice in the game is that the muzzle flashes on the Mustang D seem as if they might be bigger, the plane seems like it doesn't want to fly (lift), the controls are a lot more sloppy (twitchy, theres a lot of wandering movement with zero control input) and the BF 109 G seems to be a bit faster than the Mustang (doesn't sound right to me).

Anyway, I notice no difference in engine sounds, gun sounds. dive sounds, fly by sounds, etc.

Do you think the downloads are working? I had expected dramatic differences.
Do you have any recommendations?
The link for the Merlin fly by sound doesn't exist. Where are there authentic Mustang engine sounds?

One thing I think that this game has always needed are decent sounds that simulate what these planes were really like. The doppler shifted box fan sounds just don't cut it.
