sound modding: wtf is going on??!! lol
#1

Ok, I've got some great sounds for aircraft guns, a few that belong to me, and some I downloaded here. They're all properly formatted to work with the game. So, I replace all the old sounds in the Samples folder, like everyone else does, and run the game. It STILL plays the old sounds, despite the fact that they no longer exist. And yes, I'm 100% sure I got rid of the old ones, put in the new ones. They have the proper file names and everything. But the old ones, which no longer exist, still get used by the game.

How? This makes no sense... :? Is there some other folder that I need to overwrite the old sounds in? I've never heard of such, and don't think anyone else has ever experienced this. I even used version switcher to go back to standard, then back to 4.09modded, wondering if the batch files would "recompile" the game with my new sounds and get them working. It didn't... I'm a programmer, and I've never seen a program do anything like this. But, I must say, I'm not totally familiar with the way IL-2 works yet.

Please give some advice! I want my new, realistic gun sounds!!! :'(

Well, some of them are working now. I think part of the problem is that some guns aren't using the sounds which have the same name as the gun. I'm looking at which one uses which in the presets, and trying to straighten things out. But the game is still using sounds which no longer exist, and it makes no sense...

EDIT:

I figured this out. I had my directories structured wrong from copying the game a while back. I straightened it out. The reason the sounds for the 109's MGs were still the old ones is because it uses the sounds found in MODS/FW190A-3/Samples. Changed it out, and voila. Got all my cool stuff working now.

Sorry to waste forum space on this, only to figure it out afterward. If you have any questions about how to swap out sounds, feel free to ask. It's really easy.

But I have one more question anyway. How could one put different sounds for guns or aircraft which use the same ones? Would it work if I found the aircraft in the MODS folder, and added a "Samples" and "Presets" folder inside with the proper files to utilize them?

Like I've said before, I've got lots of sophisticated audio editing equipment, and if someone could explain how the UI and IL-2 utilize sounds, I can make an awesome. realistic sound pack for us. If I had more time, I'd just figure it out myself (like I usually end up having to do for everything), but I've got a lot of work to do, plus the time it will take to create/edit sounds for this.

I had the same issue as well, wasted almost a day trying to find it!! What I have found with all mods, is that the game will load the files in alphabetical order starting the in the MODS directory. SO if you have an aircraft sound in Folder A but you install a new one to Folder B, you will hear the one from Folder A. ALSO anything installed in the MODS directory will be played over those installed in the old soundmod 'Files' directory.

Hope that helps Smile

Yep, that's what I had to learn the hard way!

I'm usually extremely busy, and it's frustrating when I don't have enough time to break it down and discover how it works. That's usually why I ask, and then end up figuring it out before anyone replies lol.

I've got tons of work to do every day, and I'm also working on a brand new WWII sim in my free time. So it gets pretty hectic, and I can't always devote the time to IL-2 that she truly deserves! Big Grin
