[BETA] Improved Weapon Hit Debris Mod [Added extra d/l link]

Keinmann's Debris Effect Mod
*v1.0b*

!S everyone!

I just finished up with the "beta" version of my new debris effect mod. No longer must you look at absurd green and cartoonish looking debris from aircraft you shoot (or when you GET shot, lol)! This is definitely an improvement over the old, and rather silly looking hit debris.

I have a before and after screenshot for you to see. Keep in mind, this doesn't do justice to it, but you can at least get an idea of what it's like. These are *very tiny* .tga sprites that create this debris effect, so they are extremely low resolution. I'm going to be trying to find a way to get higher res debris without killing performance, very soon.

Before and After:

Note the ugly, and silly looking green debris in the before pic, as well as the ugly looking, cartoonish gray hunks....

It was really hard to get good screenies of this, and the new debris looks *much* better in game than in this pic. You definitely won't be seeing any more green junk zipping past your plane when you're attacking the enemy! Also note, the single pieces of debris are NOT as big as a few of them look in the "After" pic. Those are just 2 or more that appear stuck together in the pic, though they really are not. They scatter in game, and look really cool. Confusedhock:

INSTALLATION:

Standard Windows Users:

This comes with a self-installer. If you have a normal IL-2 installation on a regular operating system, it will go straight to your "MODS" folder by default. It's a very small set of files, and installs in the blink of an eye. As soon as you extract it, you are ready to play.

Others:

If you are using some other type of operating system (like Mac or a 64bit OS), or if you have IL-2 installed somewhere besides "Program Files", you will need to click "Browse" and guide this mod into your MODS folder manually. It's very simple, and only takes a second.

Well, there you have it! I hope everyone enjoys this little, but nonetheless nice, effect! I appreciate your feedback, and I'm more than happy to answer any questions you might have. Check back here for updates in the future. I'll also be working on some other "detail mods" like this soon. Game developers often overlook or neglect these little things like this, but those little things count!

P.S.-

I highly recommend getting Th!rdeye's weapon hit mod that gives you very realistic looking puffs of smoke when you hit an aircraft with cannon rounds! It goes great with this new debris!

Also, check out my new 7.92mm MG sound mod. It will give you some nice sounds for the early 109s, Stukas, and other planes armed with 7.92mm guns.

You're all more than welcome! Big Grin

It's my pleasure to improve the game in any way I can, and make things a little better and more realistic. People obviously like this one, because I've had a ton of d/l hits on Mediafire within the past couple hours! Confusedhock:

Keep the feedback coming! You can also pass on some recommendations for future updates to this (which are coming *very* soon).

Heheheh!

Glad my instructions were clear and to the point! Big Grin

Really makes me happy to see this mod is appreciated. It's one of the first things I've ever published here, and I'm glad it's a winner. Rest assured, I'll continue improving this, and I'll be bringing in some new detail/effect mods in the near future. Look out for a new mega gun sound pack in the future, utilizing *real* gun and cannon sounds. The only thing holding me back is my lack of free time, between real work, and working on a brand new WWII sim. But I enjoy doing what I can.

Thanks to everyone who's downloaded this mod, and double thanks to those who've given feedback! Modders always appreciate hearing reviews of their work!

Thanks for this great mod Keinmann. I wonder how hard is it to change the size of the debris? It's a bit hard to see them when playing at 1920x1200 screen res. I can make the .tga files bigger. What do I need to change in the .mat files if I want to increase the .tga size to 40x40?

Thanks again!

Thanks Keinmann. Used it this week end and fantastic! No more green popcorn balls coming at me! Thanks a million!

And I agree with RRuger ... great instructions! But when I tried to load it to my Apple LCII ....

sorry, couldn't resist.

If you want to make your debris bigger 911, you don't have to change anything in the MAT files...

You could simply open up my targas, select the image inside a rectangular marquis, and make them bigger. You can even repaint them in different colors.

I just didn't want to make them too big and goofy looking. If they're made too big, they look kind of strange because they're so low res. I imagine you could use a higher res image, but it could kill your fps, depending on what kind of system you have. Also, there was another reason I left them small. The game already drops off 3D parts of aircraft when you damage them enough. This effect is really just to simulate debris from "light" damage.

A LOT of debris is generated when you hit an aircraft. So if you use too large of an image, it could cause some major fps issues online. I haven't experimented with it yet. But you can bet your bottom dollar I'll be working to improve this. I'd really like to be able to use 10 or more different targas and mat files, to give more variety in the type of debris you see. But that probably goes down to the original coding of the game, which I won't mess with for obvious reasons...

P.S.-

I definitely don't mind you or anyone else editing the images and improving them. If you do, be sure to share them with me, and I will most likely add them in an update and credit you for them. What I don't want, is someone just tweaking my mod and trying to publish it as "their own". That would be a huge dishonor. But 99% of folks here are honorable guys and gals.
