"Ghost" files with Vista?
#1

S!

I have a question concerning FMB: I downloaded a static campaign some days ago, and I changed something (i.e. planes) with FMB. Later, I uninstall Il2, delete Ubisoft folder, cleaning with CCleaner.

Then, I re-install Il2, re-downloaded the static campaign, open FMB and... the changed I did previously were mantained!

In a similar way, DCG campaign are showed in Campaign selection menues, even if every file was deleted after Il2 uninstall.

I supposed a Vista issue... any suggestion and info for deleting any previous setting?
Thanks.

The VISTA creates a special folder called VirtualStore.

The files are in that folder. Search does not find the files in this folder.

It is all about security for applications. UAC

c:\users\youruser\Appdata\local\VirtualStore

Here is a link, or you can google on virtualstore and find plenty more information.

I no longer put Il2 into the default folders. C:\program files (x86) and C:\program files the program will install working/cache files in virtual store. folder. No problem since I've done this way.

I create a folder c:\IL2\ and install in this folder.

that would explain why this b17g bomber won't disappear after reinstalling my game after 5 times

Edit: i take that back, i have like a phantom file or something. even after removing this file that saved this bomber, its still there. is there another file or folder that might be doing this or should i just uninstall and reinstall the game into a new folder?

This is what I did first:

1. I did not remove anything.

2. I unistalled the Il2 from Control Panel

3. After unistall completed I went into the program files (x86) folder that Vista used to install C:\program files\ubisoft\Il2 sturmovik. I changed the name of the ubisoft folder to ubisoft-disable.

4. I removed shortcut from the desktop.

5. The uninstaller uninstalls the IL2, but doesn remove from directory.

This is what I did second:

I installed IL2 in a new folder same HDD under a different folder name, such as C:\IL2

When you install outside program file folder NO files are created under virtual store for that install.

I don't kow about moving files out of virtualstore folder, because I didn't do that.

You may be able to copy and paste from the VirtualStore folder to save your work.

I didn't do this, I just started over. Just don't have time for messing with the MSFT stuff.

Not being flippant about it. Sometimes its just best to move on, even if you do lose some work.

I went into my new folder c:\IL2 and right-click on the Il2FB.exe file and created a desktop shortcut.

Now I have no problems with the Ghosts.

The original folder for IL2 C:\program files\ubisoft-disable\Il2 sturmovik is still on my HDD.

Guess I shoud remove it.

I kept it orignally, because I didn't know what problems I might have doing the above. LOL

As long as I have nothing pointing to the IL2FB.EXE in the folder I shouldn't have any problems.

You can remove all the uninstalled il2 folders in the C:\program files (x86)\ if you like, shouldn't hurt a thing.

Good luck

Sorry, I run the Vista 64Bit version.

There are two folers created when you have 32 bit applications installed

c:\program files ...........this is for 64 bit apps
c:\program files (x86)...this is for 32 bit apps

Since the Il2 1946 is a 32 bit app it will automatically install in the latter folder, if you accept the default.

ok well everytime i uninstall it the folder it was in and shortcut are removed it was in is gone too. unlike everyone else who might have the game disk itself i had to download mine from GOG.com but that shouldn't be a problem right? but anyway when i uninstall the game the folder it was in is lost so i couldn't change the name.

You do not have to retain the old folder. I did because I did. No reason.

Don't worry if it is gone, because you don't need anything there.

---------------------------

I uninstall IL2 using the Control panel to clean out registry entries.

---------------------------

When you new install of IL2 do a custom install to a folder that is NOT in folder called "program files" folder (the default)

Install IL2 in any folder you name, but NOT inside the "program files" folder or you will get the virtualstore thing again.

---------------------------

I don't know about GOG.com. Someone else will have to help with that, if it's a problem.

GOG could be the problem cause i actually did that just like you said after my mods won't work. but i'm downloading a program called regseeker right now. i'll uninstall the game and have this program to seek out any file with IL2 in it or mods. i'll know if this works if i don't see the b17g and b24 in the aircraft viewer. if those tow planes are still there then i'm going to Steam and buy it there. i mean steam shouldn't be a problem right?

Did you find the virtualstore folder?

Remember this.. no search is going to find anything in the VirtualStore folder.

You will not be able to find the folder with the vista search either.

I gave you a trail in my first posting.

The planes you mentioned you installed may be in the VirtualStore folder.

However, since they are mods you may have mod installer or file folder issue with mod location.

----------------------------------------

You don't need regseeker or any of that.

I don't know about steam. Why don't you post in 1C:forums there are plenty of people that have DL the IL2 1946. I don't know if you can DL from there, but you can have good discussion with other users. I know you won't have problems with DL from there, if it is possible.
here is link to forum http://forum.1cpublishing.eu/forumdisplay.php?f=98

If I were you I would contact the company you mentioned. They may have help for you about DL file being corrupt of something.

thats it, i give up. ether my windows vista is being a retarded fuck knocker with this game or GOG.com fucked something up, cause i can't rid of the downloaded planes i have and put in new ones, mods won't work and i've pretty much stressed out every idea i could use. not even backing up my system works, i'm stuck with a game thats un-mod-able unless steam can save me or i wait for that new game thats coming out after my birthday

Frustration eh?

Back at square one.

You need a competent IL2 installaton first and foremost.

go control panel and uninstall IL2

Then go to folder location where the folers for IL2 are.

Delete all those files and folders.

Delete contents of virtualstore folder

C:/Users/Myuser/AppData/Local/VirtualStore/

myuser is your user account name

If you don't delete the contents of VirtualStore and you install Il2 in the a folder named

c:/program files or c:/program files(x86) your IL2 will store missions and other data in the VirtualStore folder.

-------------------------------------

Do a clean install of IL2 into directory C:\IL2

Run the IL2 application. Go into quick mission builder and run a mission. You can run on Autopilot is fine. Just make sure you have a working IL2 application.

Update your Il2 with 4.08 Patch

Run the IL2 application after intalling the 4.08 patch. Run another quick misison to make sure is is working.

If you get through this procedure you know you have a "good working copy of IL2".

This is adequate installation to enjoy IL2 online and offline.

-------------------------------------------

If you have the 4.08 IL2 working you can patch further using 4.09.

The patch 4.09 is not finished, but it is working.

You can apply the patch 4.09 as it is floating around.

---------------------------------------------------------------

If you get this far and everything is working well then you can think about applying mods.

I would not apply the 4.09 patch unless you plan to add mods.

Then I would suggest you use the Unified Installer, because it has a MOD friendly version of 4.09 with switcher program. This way you can do online servers where only 4.08 allowed. You can use either IL2 patched versions 4.09 or 4.08 with or without mods. 4 choices available.
