How to land the B-17?
#1

I have 15 years of flight sim experience, but I can't manage to land a B-17 decently. I can't find a speed whre it descends. It's too fast, I have to nose down, then suddenly it stalls, and one of the wings drop...Could someone teach me? Thanks!

The FM's of the former AI only aircraft is not as sophisticated as in the others. But unless we get a new slot B17 this is not likely to change. I find using less flaps on landing helps to prevent excessive lift.
Also not putting the wheels down makes it stop quicker

I find a slightly lower angle of approach works. First few times I tried to land it, I kept on forgeting how tall the thing is!!

I like to make a long, shallow approach.
Open rads all the way, 100% prop pitch, gear down, and takeoff flaps. Trimming up as I slow down. ( it seams like landing flaps take forever to get it on the ground)
Touch down about 95 mph.

i sometimes land only with combat flaps, take-off flaps at the most...

i can land it fine, with three engines surviving, but one wing always dips as i touch down, and i wreck the prop on the outside engine of that side

But its a landing of sorts

Glad to know I'm not the only one with all the above problems.

How to land a Bomber very rapidly in 3 steps:

1- Shoot it
2- Shoot it
3- Well Shoot it

I defy you to find a more speedy way!

When de flaps are in the landing position keep adjusting the speed and use the rudder to keep it line-up. I think the best speed is around 160-165 km to land in the game.

- Since first attempting to land all the different types in IL2 I have followed the well known method of taking the thing up to 3000ft and finding out at what speed the type stalls at with approach configuration (gear and full flap) approach power set, and a rate of descent appropriate to the type (500ftpm in this case)
- The B17 drops a wing at around 80mph on the ASI, so your target threshold speed is usually x 1.2 and therefore around 100mph IAS.
- A while back, I made a track complete with voice over using an ntrk with 4.09 on Canons lovely Channel map.
- It is about a couple of minutes long and if it helps anyone with landing the B17, well that is great.
- You will need manual view to get the best indications of speed, ROD etc. (it is an ntrk so the slip indicator is I'm afraid awry!)

I think you will find that this is generally true for just about ALL of the "AI made flyable" planes.

All the advice is good here.

But how I learned to land the B-17, and for takeoffs and landings for that matter in any other airplane, is to watch how th AI pilots do it.

They ain't dumb. In fact, they're better than me

Fly a B-17 coop as a gunner and just use external views to watch what they do.

They engage landing flaps only when the "field is made".

As a passenger you'll still be able to see your speedbar. Take note of it.

Watch the WWII training films at Zeno's http://www.zenoswarbirdvideos.com/main.html

Good Luck !
