New DCG campaign available - Defence of Darwin 1942
#1

My Defence of Darwin 1942 campaign was released for download at www.lowengrin.com today. It's a hypothetical campaign revolving around the defence of Darwin in the face of a carrier task force and amphibious invasion.

One easy question....

I have the AAA UI v1.1.1 installed so do I need to install another "Darwin map"?

Downloaded this yesterday and had a bit of a play, OMG did the Japs lose a heap of aircraft in that first raid, but the next one they still put up just as many Confusedhock:

Now for a little question

In the installation instructions, it says

Quote:Single player campaign

1. Set DCG to work according to DGen replacement Full-Auto mode.

2. Select 457 Defence of Darwin 1942 campaign as the active third party campaign: In DCG panel, under files scroll list, check active "Optional third party data folder", and when prompted, select allcampaign.ini file present in "DarwinDCG42" folder.

Well I cant find any file called allcampaign.ini in the "DarwinDCG42" folder!

WTF

And how does one edit the squadron details like the aircraft flown when DCG is running in DGen replacement Full-Auto mode? Mine keeps coming up "no active campaign" when I click on squadron editor?

BTW Im running a fresh install of 3.41

Ok first one,

You should have unzipped the campaign to it's own folder somewhere. I usually create a sub folder in the DCG folder. In this resulting folder there should be a file allcampaign.ini - if you can't find one then something is very wrong. It definitely is in the zipfile you download from Lowengrin's site so I can only guess that either you have a incomplete download (although I would have thought you'd get a winzip error in this case) or you have somehow lost or misplaced the file. Perhaps clean out the folder you unzipped the campaign to (assuming you gave it it's own folder otherwise please don't or you'll probably wipe out something you need) and re-extract the zipfile again.

Second one,
What you need to do is start DCG and then under "Files" there is a "Select DCG Campaign folder" - click on this and you'll get the usual file navigation window displayed. Locate your IL2 folder, find the Missions folder and double click on it to drill down to the next level of folders. You'll now see the folders and files in the Missions folder. Find the Campaign folder and drll down again and locate the RA folder. This is the folder containing offline RAAF campaign data. Double click on this folder and you'll see a folder named something like DGen_8_457Darwin42 with your pilot profile added on the end. EG one of my German DCG campaign folders is called DGen_U_Poland39Stonehouse0 and my offline Darwin folder looks like DGen_8_457Darwin42Stonehouse0.

Anyway double click this folder and you should see a file squadrons.dcg. Select it and click the open button and you should be returned to the DCG main screen. This time if you click on the squadron editor button you should be able to change squadron details and setup for every squadron in the campaign. You can even add new ones.

If you do a bit of reading of the quides at Lowengrin's site and have a few practice runs you'll see that you can even do things like shift the whole campaign forward to 1943 with corresponding aircraft types, give the Japanese King Tiger tanks etc. Pretty much the only thing you can't do through the DCG user screens is change the roads, sea routes, airbases etc because I've defined those in the campaign set up files (eg Darwin42.rds is the data file defining the road routes in the campaign).

You can do stuff like move the front lines from where I've set them up, change the allegiance of locations (you could edit the campaign so that the Japanese start the campaign owning the island for example) and even turn off all the flak guns around Darwin through the Column and Static Objects Setting Panel (the little tank button).

But you do need to tell DCG which campaign you want to edit and that is what you are doing when you pick a squadrons.dcg file.

The great thing about DCG is that it gives you many different options and is a very powerful tool but this is also one of the crosses it bears too as people can find it a steep learning curve when they start using it. All I can recommend is stick with it and it will reward you. I'm happy to try to help you and I know pure DCG questions are always welcome at Lowengrin's forum.

Hope the above helps you anyway.

Stonehouse

Can anybody explain to me why whenever I load a mission in this Campaign my frame rate drops back to almost unplayable,I have checked out other Campaigns generated on other maps like Guadacanal and Tobruk and the frame rates are perfectly normal.Nothing has changed except the map, still same aircraft, campaign conditions etc.I have noted that I can fly the Spitfire okay but the A20 missions are really bad especially lined up on the runway and approaching shipping. So I tried flying the A20 on the Guadacanal attacking shps no problems frame rates are great on take off and attacking warships.

Dinga, you probably have too many planes in the sky. DCG defaults to using a max number of aircraft for missions. To tailor this setting and others to your tastes, click Run -> Setup Wizard. This will allow you to set parameters for your missions or campaigns.

Changing at this point will not changes the settings for your existing campaign though. You will need to delete that one and start another for the changes to take effect.

IThanks vonofterdingen but as I noted I have the same amount of planes flying in other Campaigns with no noticeable drop in performance.I have not changed any setting when I tried other maps as well so I can not see why things are so slow.I just wonder if anyone else has this problem when using this Darwin DCG Campagn.
