[WIP] New Map - Aleutian Islands Map
#1

As promised the new Aleutians map is in version 1 and reading for use. You can download via the following link. Install instructions are included in the zipfile.

This is another joint venture by Cracken, who choose the idea for making the map, did the research and testing.

Because of the large geographical area, we had to make some conceptual decisions on how to get as much of this vast chain of islands onto one single loadable map. We fudged a bit and moved the islands closer to one another, while sadly leaving out the middle group which contains Adak. There are however both Japanese held and American held islands on the map and more than enough open water to simulate flying great distances.

It is a sparsely populated map, bar Dutch and Constantine Harbor, the airfields and several dozens of small fishing shacks and outposts scattered about.

We might suggest playing with rain or snow as a weather factor to better simulate reality. We also kept the temperature above freezing. Without knowing the results, we once set map temperature to minus 10 and had a mild panic attack when it turned out that the map water froze over - but not in a very realistic manner.

For fun, here is a link to a war-time cartoon on conditions in the Aleutians:

If anyone is wondering, the walrus in the cartoon is a take-off on Jimmy Durante, at the time a well-known American actor/comedian.

And lastly some screenshots

update for version 1.1

here is a downloadlink for a newly textured version of the Aleutians map. A readme install is included in the rar file. Both inks should work

The new version includes winter textures from the standard UI 1.1 winter Slovakia map which are in higher resolution and give a more detailed landscape. A few small glitches in the landscape have been fixed here and there - not all by any means - and a new coast texture by avala is designated for coastlines, all of which is meant to make blending between snow and coastline brown more pleasing to the eye.

UPDATE on Fixing 'Hard Water'

Problem : Bombs falling water will leave a crater and seaplanes cannot always land on water either.

Apparently this can be fixed by a very simple editing of the load.ini file.
this is a line of text that is near the beginning of the file:

[WORLDPOS]
CAMOUFLAGE = WINTER

please change that to

[WORLDPOS]
CAMOUFLAGE = SUMMER

Apparently by editing the map to a winter map, it makes all water behave like ice, even if the water textures show unfrozen water. By changing the camouflage to summer, this should fix the hard water problem. BUT, it will give default summer skins on certain airplanes where applicable and it will not allow the use of skis on a few aircraft either - should you happen to choose a skiable model - which is a bit unlikely in the Aleutians. These are the Gladiator and Blenheim I believe.

Funny - tried copying the link from Mediafire with filename option several times and it did indeed come up missing a part. Don't know why.

Anyway updated with a link to Mediafire without filename and it should work fine.

Here it is again:

Well, in a few weeks I'll be gone for the summer (to study the landscapes in Spain ... ha ha) and have little time or Internet access to upload maps. It should however be a good opportunity to start populating maps or maybe even (fingers crossed) try to learn the mysteries of the auto-populating tool ...

But even so, before I leave, Cracken and I would like to try for one more map, yet another sparsely populated region and again with something different in the way of landscape look, and yet again another out-of-the-way campaign area, something not yet done in the way of a 'forgotten battle' thing.

Might as well say that it will most likely be Dakar 1940 - so if anyone has any old British vs Vichy French battle plans or scenarios in their mind, start dusting them off ... there won't be much in the way of hills or mountains or terrain height differences, but we're not going to turn it into a stock sand desert either ... and it might be a good occasion to finally use some of those great looking Egypt object by dlv ... ever since I saw them I have been itching to put them into a map.

Nice looking map...
though is there a chance of getting a 1/2 scaled version of whats there?
The whole flying long distances thing is nice once and a while, but when a bunch of guys are playing a DCG campaign etc..
it gets rather tedious and most guys dont want to spend there entire night flying 110-150 km to take a flak hit and then wait for everyone else that did survive to fly home again.
That gets terribly old, real fast.
Would love to use it for a few DCG campaigns but.. these long long distances between airfields just make it impractical.

Congratulations Agracier. It's a very nice map and I like it very much due to his unique atmosphere.
Do you plan to create few roads (of course, if existing in ww2 reality) ?

I can add some roads if anyone can tell me there actually were roads back in WWII ... I didn't think them strictly necessary. Of course in Dutch Harbor there would be roads, but since it's a city that would be a given anyway ...

Open to suggestions on this ...
