Just curious as to any possibility of this mod, since their is a no fin fillet mod for p-51d-5, is it possible to mod the p-51 late B and c models to have the fin fillet?
saw that post but where in its 15 pages is a picture of the B with fin fillet??
This is what has me confused: in your excellent picture of that gleaming P-51B?C (im not sure of the -10-15 etc) it dosnt have the added on dorsal fin fillet i was asking about. but your sig picture has one with a malcom hood and fin fillet, thats the version i was asking about. It is my understanding that this came about in mar/apr 1944 and was retroactively fitted in the field. My personal research books etc were limited to squadron signal books that have been negligently tossed by well meaning wife so im far from an expert in P-51 types /subversions etc.
But thank you again for steering me into further avenues of learning.
Exactly where on the body is it?
on top of the fuselage where the tail assembly attaches, in your gleaming photo it would be above the dude stenciled on the rear, it is a stiffener to reduce tail failures at high g manuverings. look closely at the tail on your big photo and then on the tails of the ones in your sig. you can make out the fillet there.
It'd be ventral if it was on the bottom. Anything you see referred to as 'dorsal' lies along the aircraft's spine, just like on vertebrate animals; hence the fins on sharks' backs are referred to as the dorsal fin.
That's what I originally thought. I'm so confused...
Mustang,
There is one on the Malcom canopied B in your sig photo....
Thanks, that answers the question of fillet. Now, what's the dorsal fin?
Dorsal means back. If something is dorsal it is always along the spine, i.e. the top of the fuselage in the case of an aircraft. Conversely, ventral is always the 'belly'.
That cleared it up at all?
