You are actually thinking of skins. Templates are used to make skins. The skins go in your skins folders for the plane they belong to.

For example:
Your Panther skins would go in the folder F9F2_Panther. this folder has to be made in your skins folder since the Panther did not come with the game.

You can find your skins folders in the following location:

C:\Program Files\Ubisoft\IL-2 Sturmovik 1946\PaintSchemes\Skins

Then find the folder that belongs to the plane you have a skin for and place the skin there. When you start the game, you go to the arming screen and select the skin for that plane you want.

So you put the templates in a folder you like to use (Documents/My Pictures/ or something). Then you open a template.
You select a base colour, make a camo pattern or a specific colour skin. After that you go through all the layers and use the sliders to get the look you want. When you're happy with it, save that as a BMP file (256 colours, 8Bit) in the ...\PaintSchemes\Skins\[aircraft]\ directory and try it out in the game.

Have fun!

I thought all skins had to be in BMP format for the game to recognize them in the skins folders.

Oh and don't forget you need Photoshop (psd) to open templates. Paint Shop Pro also works but has it's own format (psp) that it uses. A tool you may find useful is "Bright FB" Converts bmp files to 8bit 256 colours without loosing the colour or screwing it up.

GIMP, and Paint.NET with plug-in will open PSD files as well.

Is this the "Bright" you mentioned? http://www.simmerspaintshop.com/forums/ ... right.html

I have Bright but don't know where it goes in PS or how to use it.
