P-38 E F G and H

OK. Work on the 3D model as officially started! Whoot! Time to spread the word!!!!

What is this project? Simple. Its to bring the early P-38 models to IL2 for early war maps. I am the artist that modeled both the P-38J and L, so who better?

What will be in this project? As many of the early type's as possible as long as there are not major modeling to be done.

P-38 E (cover over forward part of GE turbo, small chin, slight changes to radiators, and forward canopy) Not considered "combat ready" most E's never saw combat. About 200 made, delivery started Sep 41. Some E's were destroyed at Pearl Harbor. 1150HP per engine, 395MPH top speed.

P-38 F (3D model same as the E). The first "combat ready" 1325HP per engine, but limited to 1150HP due to inter cooler limit. Added hardpoint for 1000lb or drop tanks under each wing. Over 300 made. First delivery's in March 42. "For a general combination of climb, range, endurance, speed, altitude and fire power, the P-38F is the best production line fighter tested to date at this station. Types tested include the P-47, P-51, P-40F and P-39D-1. "

P-38 G (3D Model same as the E). Added combat flaps. Greatly improved turn performance over the F model. G-10-LO added 1600lb bomb pylong and provisions for a triple cluster of 4.5-inch rocket launchers on each side of the central nacelle. Over 700 G's were made. Delivery's started August 42.

P-38 H (3D model same as the E). Engines capable of 1425HP, but still limited by its inter cooler. Added automatic oil cooling flaps to fix chronic over-heating of engine and enable military power above 25,000 feet to be increased from 1150 to 1240 hp.

PLEASE NOTE!!! The HP increased from the F to H model, but it was always limited by its inter cooler in the manual. The pilots still could use the rated HP (or more) if needed in combat, but risked detonating the engines, or blowing the inter cooler off. I have spoken to many P-38 vets who went WELL beyond the inter cooler limits when being shot at. Im hoping that we can make 100% power the 1150HP limit, but 110% the higher limit, but risk engine damage it used longer then x time. This would be historical.

This mod will be a quick one. Im only planning on changing the bare minimum, as im very busy. This includes the chin, forward canopy, and upper boom. I have 0 (ZERO) plans on updating the cockpit. The differences between the J and the early models are massive. If someone is willing to do this for me, they are welcome to join, but they must have experience. I dont have time to train someone in the middle of this project.

Also, there are current plans for new slot late P-38's like the J-5-LO with additional loadout options along with other tweaks, and a possible J-25-LO.

All updates will be posted below.

Update #1.

This is VERY VERY early work, and only a test to make sure the model imported fine. Here is a quick pic showing the modified engine coweling for the early model F.

SWEET! Big Grin I'm glad to see this finally getting done, as the early models were very significant in my preferred theater, the pacific. I can't wait to see these! Thank you very much Gibbage! Big Grin

Great news to see the early gabelschwanz teufel (please forgive pigeon Deutsch, but I always loved that name).
Please understand that I am not intending to press you, but my curiosity does demand I ask if you had considered the F-5 PR version and the 2 crew bomb aimer version (do not know the correct type designation).

Finally Yamamoto is in "authentic" trouble for those inspection visits to Kahili.

Thank You Gibbage.

F4 and F5? No. Not from me. This is a combat sim. We have no real function for photo recon. If you want that, paint some black windows on the side of the gondola and fly around with no ammo. When you fly over enemy teritory, press screenshot a few times before you get shot down. Maybe even make a "chick chick" shutter sound with your mouth. Then youll have the authentic photo recon experience!

BTW, my solution to those who want training 2 seat aircraft is similar, and involves two office chairs and someone yelling at you "DONT DO THAT!".

Good to see this project, especially since all you really need to do is change the engine nacelles.

Will you be modeling the P38D and Lightning I? They were dogs compared to the later Lightnings, but they were the first operational variants. For the Lightning I, all you'd need to do is cover over the superchargers, which doesn't seem to be any trickier than reworking the engines.

While you're reworking FMs, it would also be handy to have the various F-4 and F-5 conversions, since they represented a fairly significant U.S. and allied type and there currently aren't any USAAF recce planes in the game. No modeling would be necessary since these planes were often fitted with dummy guns. While you might be able to get the same effect by just flying a P38F or G with loadout set to "empty", I believe that the Photo Recce versions were slightly lighter and faster due to lack of armor, ammo and guns. Racers and historical mission builders would love you.

My sources say that only the late series Gs had provisions for rockets, or will you be doing both early and late series Gs?

I'll take this to mean that we don't get the "Droop Snoot" variant or the P-38M nightfighter. Big Grin
