Pretty much any new Graphics card will run IL2 easily, what tends to be the deciding factor now is the Processor as IL2 is pretty CPU intensive. I'd go for a faster CPU if IL2 is your main game.

I can't say anything about the Nvidia card as I have not owned one, but I did own a 4870x2 2GB card, and quickly sold it.

Graphically it's a beast and as I have a 1000W CPU, this wasn't an issue. However it runs hot, very hot. At stock speed and just sat in the case running the desktop only, it idled between 83 and 86 degrees Celsius. A little tweaking on the ATi Tuner got the temps. down to between 68 and 70 with a barely noticeable fan noise increase.

However, once you start getting 3D graphics running, be prepared to sit next to a Hair Dryer as the fan goes into overload keeping the card cooled down! For me, noise is a consideration and I just couldn't bare the sound it produced. I now have a Sapphire 4870 2Gb Vapor-X:

which runs incredibly fast and is way quieter than the 4870x2 and suits everything I need it to do.

Just my thoughts, but if heat and noise are not a problem I like the 4870x2

Cheers, MP.

Get Nvidia. CF (ATI) is not working in IL-2 1946.

Nvidia is good for OpenGL game.
ATI's driver has too many bugs for IL2.
I have used Nvidia 6800GT and ATI X850XT.

(The link is inoperative)

Same results with one only 4870, two 4870 in CF or one 4870X2... CF is not scalling and ATI is failling with this sim.

Get Nvidia. Less problems ahead.

Which backs up my initial post that IL2 is more CPU intensive and pretty much any new Graphics card will do a good job with the sim. So spend your extra money on CPU power rather than graphics

Here's a website that can compare vid cards for you.

Personally from day one I bought Nvidia and haven't even looked at ATI from all the horror stories with drivers etc etc....just too many problems with ATI from what I've heard.

The only ATI card I ever had gave me a lot of graphical issues and bugs on IL-2 and some other games, I never bought another ATI card ever since, I'm happy with my 9800GT so far (might upgrade soon).

I have a Nvidia 8800GT card, and I run the game perfectly well with only occasional slight stutters down to 25-30 fps (mostly to do with the fact that I put too many heavy bombers on my missions though

I'd get Nvidia, again... all the horror stories about ATI...
