Questions about engine torque between retail & UI 1.1
#1

I was wondering if any of the mods that are part of Unified Installer 1.1 alter or override the amount of engine torque present that cause the aircraft to roll to one direction during a turn, compared to the standard install of 4.08 or 4.09. If so would disabling a certain folder in the MODS directory resolve this issue?

Or was there any flight model changes with how torque is handled between the retail versions of Pacific Fighters 4.04 and IL-2 1946 4.08 or 4.09?

I'm curious since turning off the Torque and Gyro effects doesn't appear to prevent an uncontrollable roll when turning, as if the torque was not actually disabled, and it seems that this latent torque effect is much less pronounced with Pacific Fighters 4.04 compared to UI 1.1 with 4.08 or 4.09.

Hi RaptorRage,

As far as I have read about it, some single-seat, single-engine fighters, such as the Fw-190 apparently did behave like that in real life. In which planes do you find a difference from earlier stock IL-2 versions to the UI?

We do not edit the flight models of stock aircraft, so no, there is no edits to the torque with the UI series.

IIRC there were some changes in torque (among other FM changes) between retail and 4.08. but like magpie said, there shouldnt be any differences since the UI.

Seemed to be pretty consistent across the board for aircraft between 4.04 and 4.09 that the torque affected the turn more in the later version even with the Torque and Gyro toggle turned off. For example I duplicated the conditions of a right hand turn at 300mph using a P-51D between each version. In Pacific Fighters 4.04 the turn could be sustained even past a 90 degree bank and recovered without much issue, whereas in IL-2 1946 4.09 the aircraft would stall and roll at or before the 90 degree bank was achieved, and turning to the left was less responsive than turning to the right.

Guess my question overall is if there was a setting that removed the torque induced effects completely, as it would seem that would have been the point of turning off the torque and gyro setting in the first place. Or does the game still have torque effect by design even with the toggle turned off?

Hi RaptorRage,

I don't know enough about the version-history of the IL-2 game to answer your question directly. I started to play it when Forgotten Battles came out. Back then, I had all dificulty settings turned off, except for "vulnerability." I don't remember encountering the problem you describe. When "torque and gyro effects" were turned off, they didn't appear in the game. Could it make a difference, what edition of a particular game version one uses? For example, could there be differences in game behaviour between a store-bought german or English version of IL-2, or a version purchased online?

Over the years, playing IL-2, I increased the difficulty level until I could play with all those difficulty settings that pertain to flight characteristics turned on. However, during this process I pretty much settled on flying mostly Axis planes. When I did fly a P-51 on occasion, I found that it was a rather unstable aircraft that needed to be handled with great care. I don't know if the flight characteristics of the P-51 are accurately modeled, but apparently with many aircraft, the game's modeling is said to be rather authentic and accurate. People who have actually flown P-51, decribed it as a "pilot's plane," easy to fly and forgiving in its handling. If this is correct, it would be quite a contrast to the P-51 in-game. However, I do believe, that most combat pilots are probably partial to the plane they have been trained on and that they have gotten used to. For example, Fw-190 pilots often expressed their preference for the Focke-Wulf over the Bf-109. At the same time, I have not found any account by a Bf-109 combat pilot, who didn't like the plane. So there you go, it's all rather subjective.

There is a book by Hans-Werner Lerche, titled "Testpilot auf Beuteflugzeugen." He was a German testpilot evaluating captured Allied aircraft. Perhaps you could try and find it. Would be interesting what he had to say about the P-51 and whether or not that matches the plane's performance in the game.
