Howdy All,

My gaming system uses XP-32. I have no knowledge of any of the 64 bit systems...other than they have more available memory to use. I am just about to order parts to build a new system for the wife and am considering putting Vista 64 on it....I don't want to mess up my rig.. :roll: Thought I would experiment with hers.....she currently uses Vista 32 Home....What I have in mind on her system build is a second machine or backup with 1946 on it....just in case....

I can get an OEM Vista 64 operating system with free upgrade to Win7 (Full Install) pretty cheap at the moment....Should I do it? $109.00 U.S.

I've been running Vista Ultimate 64bit for about a year now and aside from having to wait for decent 64bit video drivers, I've had very few problems with it. There are a couple of little quirks, like having to run HL and TS in XP SP2 mode and the occassional problem installing some apps such as HL, but all in all, I've been very pleased.

Now, keep in mind that my system specs aren't your typical player's rig. I'm running 8gb of Ram and 2tb of storage, so I'm not plauged by some of the slow downs that others have experienced with the Vista OS.

Without knowing what you're running now and what your expectations are, I really can't tell you weather or not you should wait for Windows 7 x64 or what.

I've come to see Vista vs XP the same way we compared Win 98SE to Win ME a few years back. Everyone thought that ME was going to be this great OS and it was a dog. It wasn't until the very end that it finally became a stable and somewhat reliable gaming platform, but by the time that happened, the damage was done. I went straight to the 64bit ver of Vista so as to bypass most if not all of the problems that were hounding the 32bit users. With the latest SP2 release for Vista, my gaming experience has improved 10 fold.

As for getting the OS for $100.00 and then upping to Win 7 for free, I'd say go for it. Just make sure that the version you're getting is the version you REALLY want. Home Basic is o.k. but I personally prefer the Ultimate edition due to the added Network security for my rig (server).

Her system will have a Athlon 64 X2 6000 cpu...mine has a 6400 BE cpu
Her VGA will be EVGA 8800GT (superclocked) Mine will have new EVGA 275 GTX
Hers was gonna have 4gig of ram....now gonna have 8 per your system specs. Her MoBo will have upgrade path to quad core.... :wink:

I also recently got a new system running Vista Ultimate 64 bit and I have not had any problems! IL2 fully modded, HL, TS, Stab, TrackIR, FalconAF, MasterFalcon, GamersTools, etc... all work great with no need for "XP Compatibility" mode. The key thing is to install all gaming software in a custom built directory such as c:/games/, and turn off User Account Control (these tips are found on this site and others regarding installing games on Vista 64.).

I set up the following for all my games installed in this rig:

c:/games/
c:/games/utilities/

My rig is running the new Intel i7 quad 950, 12 GB ram, GTX 295 and IL2 never looked so awesome!! I average 60+FPS in the worst weather and full flak in the skies, with all graphic settings maxed! The only thing I have not been able to get working in IL2 on the 64 bit system is the random splash-screen mod.

had to get up and running, can not...not fly(LOL)

Glad I was able to help you out. I've listed the physical memory limits for all flavors of Vista (Both 32 and 64bit) as a guideline for you and anyone else that may need it.

You can run just about any 32bit app on a 64bit OS as long as you install it the correct way. Some are a little tricky but most are no brainers.
