An idea about loadouts (in future games)
#1

Note: this is not a request! It's more an idea (maybe for SoW) and i am just posting it here so that i won't forget it... Big Grin
To do this with the resources that we have now would be:
1. impossible
2. breaking several AAA policies
Sad
So. Basically, you open up your Bf-110 G-2 or Me-410 loadout screen, and you see a dropdown list with about...100 or so options. Now finding the right one isn't a problem, but that enormous list still doesn't cover all possible loadouts. Not to start with some other planes (B-24, for example). Though, even if we had all those loadouts, the lists would still be a bit confusing. I was thinking that (as said, not in IL-2, maybe in SoW) it would greatly improve the variety of possible loadouts if we could choose the loadout for EACH hardpoint /bomb bay separately, to the limit that the total weapon weight wouldn't excess a given maximum loadout weight. Maybe a little hard to understand, but i was thinking of something like this:
Let's take, for example, a Stuka B-2

Loadout: 740 / 1000 kg

Centre rack: AB 500 ( a dropdown list with all avalaible loadouts for the centre rack)
Outer wing racks: 1 SC 70 each (a dropdown list with all avalaible loadouts for the wing racks)
Inner wing racks: 1 SC 50 each (a dropdown list with all avalaible loadouts for the wing racks)

Something like that. Or for an Il-2

Loadout: YYY / XXX kg

Rocket racks: 4 BRS-172
Outer bomb bays: 1 FAB-50 each
Inner bomb bays: 1 FAB-100 each
Bomb rack: empty (the one between the bays)

Just my 2 cents. Hopefully i won't get banned for it  [/u]

This is pretty much how they do it in the Thirdwire games. Every plane has a number of "hardpoints" which can accept any munition up to a certain weight. It works well enough for jets, and the nice part is that when a new weapon gets added to the game it can be mounted on all the a/c (within limits), not just new ones.

Think yourself lucky. WW2 pilots (as a rule) didn't decide which 'loadouts' they could carry. That was decided for them. A realistic approach is to have the mission generator determine which loadout is most appropriate.

Yes, Caldrail, i know that in the reality, most pilots couldn't choose what will be hung under their plane, but i wasn't claiming that such a mod would improve overall realism. I just said it would give variety to the missions.

You know what? I don't think it would. What will happen is that everyone will find their favourite loadout and fly with little else. Especially the loadout they consider will cause the most mayhem!

It's human psychology, and not just limited to games players.

I'd respectfully disagree. I fly mudmoving a lot, and the type of the loadout I pick always depends on the mission and is by far not only one, favourite, per plane. I too have been thinking about this idea myself a long time ago, wondering why it wasn't implemented from the start anyway. While I agree it wouldn't add much variety, it would at least make picking the loadouts a lot more confortable. Look at the P-47 for example, which misses the combination of extended ammo and external loadouts. If you want do add this, you'd need to double the number of existing loadouts (all loadouts with and without extended ammo). List of loadouts would be halved if you could simply tick extended ammo on or off separately from bombrack loadouts. I fail to see one single reason to prefer our existing system over the proposed one.
