MODS folder size vs FPS/ loading times
#1

It takes over a minute for my PC to load il2. I guess it's due to the rather considerable size of my MODs folder (6GB). Is this correct? If yes, does it affect anything else (mission loading time, FPS)? Should I remove the mods that just came with UI but I never use?
Thanks for the clarification in advance!

Mine takes a bit over 2 minutes to load, with a Mods folder of 19.3GB. Everything runs fine after initial loading though. No slowdowns.

A number of the fellas in my unit (AG26) have less then "uber" machines.
"Game load" times vary depending on their processer speed and RAM.
I can tell you that the Korea map is a bear to get loaded and some cant join a game because they time out waiting for the map to load.
While there isnt much you can do as far as getting the game to load faster (I dont recomend messing with your MODS folder)
There are two things you can do to cut down on your loading time when going into a game.
(1) Turn down all the video settings to "Average".
(2) Edit the Korea map .ini.
I have posted a work-around for that below.
Hope this helps.

The problem some are having loading the Korean map is due to the large size of ed_m01.tga file in the Korea Map. The 'slower" machines cant get into a game. Here is a work-around that will work.

Edit the 'Load.ini' in the Il-2/MODS/Maps/3BG-KTO folder.
Original
[MAP2D]
ed_m01.tga
ed_m02.tga
;ed_m03.tga
;map_ed.tga

Altered (Insert the ';' semi-colon in front of the ed_m01.tga file. This will load the smaller *.tga file instead of the larger one.)

[MAP2D]
;ed_m01.tga
ed_m02.tga
;ed_m03.tga
;map_ed.tga

Do this to the Winter Korea map as well. It makes the map "smaller" and allows you to get into a game.

I have that too, with a 512 Vcard, 2GRAM, and a c2d processor. I don't remember having this before though...

I don't know if this applies to the Korea map specifically, but load times of maps in general can be reduced considerably if the ed maps are set as indexed color instead of RGB.

I noticed a DRAMATIC decrease in load time for IL2 modded when I recently upgraded my CPU.

The ONLY thing that I changed was the CPU. Every other component in my system stayed the same.

I was running an AMD 4800+ x2 and 8GB memory. I replaced the 4800+ with a Phenom II x4 940 quad core, and loading time now seems to be similiar to what it was before the mods.

How is this done?

Using an image manipulation program, such as photoshop or Gimp.

I use Gimp - Open the ed map files, then from the menu select: >image>mode>indexed

a box will pop open -> set to optimum palette in 256 colors with dithering set to none.

press the "convert" button and then >file>save as with the original file name - then a window opens and here make sure to uncheck RLE compression, then hit save.
