Hard drive losing space with time
#1

This is one of the most strange problems i ever had in my PC and i have no idea how to solve it. A low disk space warning just popped out and when i went to see my free space my 1GB that was left is gone. had only 152 MB and could sit there and watch the space decreasing even more to 0 bytes. when reaches 0 i can't open the Internet or any softwares and my PC doesn't get slow as predicted.
Any ideas? :???:

It could be time to clean up the disk. The Windows restore thing is nice, but all those restore points will eat up a hard drive. Have you used your disc tools to delete old restore points lately?

Do you have Flight simulator X?

It might be failing... I would get any valuable stuff, photos etc. off the drive asap.

For me it sounds like a Problem i had a long Time ago. By me it was the Il-2 NetCache Folder when you play many Hours Online and your Skin Download is activated the NetCache Folder will be filled with a lot of Skin Trash. After 6 Months Online playing i had 1,43GB of Skin Trash in this Folder, now i check it every Month and delete all the Files where i find in there and all is fine.

Location : IL2 1946 Main Folder \ PaintSchemes \ NetCache

and Sorry for my bad Englisch is not my native Language Smile

There are a number of things that will clutter up your system over time.

Tempory internet files: Delete them using disk cleanup
Tempory files: delete as above
System Restore Points: Delete all but the most current 2 or 3.

In IL2, like it was said, the NetCache folder contents in the Skins folder AND the NetCache folder in the MISSIONS folder as well. You can delete the contents of these two NetCache folders, NOT the folders themselves.

Also, empty your RECYCLE folder if you haven't already done so. Some people forget to do that. Those files are really still on your HDD, and will take up space as well.

Once you do the cleanup, do a defrag as well, as this will also free up some spce lost to fragmented files.

Get a program called "History Sweeper" and set it to clear all your junk every time you shut down your system.

It's free for a month or so.

Cleaned the disk 2 times; i don't have anything in my system restore to delete; thanks for the netcache idea, it helped to recover 386MB; temporary files also gone; recycle bin always emptied and no Neil Lowe, i don't have Flight simulator X.
It helps obviously. It gives more space but that free space is eaten with time and think i know why now. I passed these last hours searching for strangely big folders in my PC because that eaten space should be somewhere. I finally found the Windows Live messenger folder with 2.67 GB! Inside Windows Live/messenger there were hundreds of notepad files with weird things written and each one occupying 10.8MB. I deleted them but i could see them coming and coming. Stopping it was easy, just by closing Messenger. If it is a virus it's a very weird one and i hope Avast is enough to find and destroy it. Just in case i'm buying an external hard drive...
Those cleaning softwares can come very handy for my PC, thanks i'll give it a try Big Grin
Thanks for everyone's help i appreciate Big Grin
I hope this helps someone with similar problems as i had.

Yip, it's surprising the amount of crap CCleaner finds. After a week I can have almost a gig of temp files, history, cookies and other junk.

It wouldn't necessarily need to be a virus. It could be classed as spyware. So if the virus scan diddn't get results, try SuperAntiSpyware, SpyBot and AdAware. Not 'OR', but 'AND', just to make sure you find 99.99%. Smile

Windows Messenger Live, I had forgotten about that and that's a good reason to disable that program.

I don;t know if you use FRAPS or not. But I cleaned out the old file clips jsut because it was a clutter...and they added added up to 30 GBs. Some of the ones over a minute long can be 1 to 2 GBs each. If you're that close to being out of space, might clean yours out if you use that program.
