if you have a stock game, ie no mods at all, it is best that you get the unified installer package. then you will have a modded version if il2 and will be able to star adding more mods that you like.

if you dont have a modded game then you will not be able to install any individual mods.

No, you don't have to download that stupidly huge Unified Installer thing. But you will first have to patch the game to 4.08m (mods enabled). The patch can be found here: http://www.filefront.com/IL+2+Sturmovik ... einfo.html Run it and you should see the words 4.08m at the bottom left of the screen when you start the game. Then download a Mod activator there are several. I use sound mod 06:
(The link is inoperative) This mod is quite old but easier to run than Unified Installer (just click run and run it Big Grin ) some planes have had new custom cockpits since then like the Fi-156.
Hope this helps.

Personally i use 0.93,
but the UI is NOT stupid, it is designed so thet you can fly on dedicated servers with crt enabled( basically so everyone has the same mods and to eliminate cheating)
it is also very simple to use and requires no manual install of basic mods,( which can cause problems for the novice ) it is also, once downloaded, click once and let it run.
not only that, it will install you up to 409b1m mosded with the switchers already in place.
It is als very good if you dont know your way around file structures, which is something you need to know when manually installing some mods,
