Anti-aliasing gone strange
#1

Hi all,

I have a strange problem that I am hoping someone out there can help me out with.

I have an Intel Core 2 Duo E8400 with 4GB of memory and a GeForce GTS 250 video card. (sorry, I am at work so I don't have a print of my conf.ini)

I have always played IL2 on this new computer with my video graphics settings all maxed out, and the Nvidia setup all maxed for the ultimate in high quality graphics.

This has been working fine and the game has been looking amazing...that is until last week when I realized I didnt have my water set to Perfect.

I went into my conf.ini, set my water line to 4, and confirmed my IL2 setup had water on Perfect.

The water looks amazing, but now I am getting a lot of ragged edges as though my AA is not maxed (which it is)

And strangely, it seems worse when I enable my Track-IR.

I have tried changing everything back in my conf.ini, etc., but it still seems to be a lot less smooth then before.

Does anyone have any ideas? (I had IL2 on a previous computer, so I even went and copied all the conf.ini file lines and graphics card settings and duplicated it exactly on my new computer, and yet I still get the rough edges)

(I forgot to mention that I have only had this AA problem on IL-2...all my other games still work fine)

I would really appreciate your advice!

Thanks very much,

Dale

Download nhacer and make a profile for il2.

With nvidia control panel, il2 profile sometimes doesnt work if you are using trackir5 software because the driver is getting loaded for the trackir5 software and is missing for il2 software.

I'm actually using TrackIr 4, but you might be on to something about creating a profile for TrackIR.

Thanks,

As I'm sure you know, AA is set in the nVidia driver panel, not in IL-2, which has no settings for AA.

That said, with perfect water enabled, the edges (shorelines) of the water does not get anti-aliased, so you will always see that ragged edge there, which becomes more obvious further away.

The problem though isn't the water, its all the other objects.

For example, the water is smooth as silk but the aircraft, the carrier, even the cockpit of the plane I am in have jagged edges.

That's why I am somewhat confused about the cause...

(just realized you said shorelines would appear jagged, but what about the aircraft themselves when perfect water is enabled?)

OK, I wanted to make sure you weren't referring to the shorelines. If you have AA turned on in the nVidia driver, then you should see the smoothing for aircraft edges, etc. Are you using the nVidia Program Setting for IL-2 to set AA, or the Global Setting? In the Program Settings, it is referred to as "IL-2 Sturmovik: Forgotten Battles + Ace Expansion Pack".

I know I have it set to program setting, and that is IL-2, but not sure if it's the full IL-2 title that you are saying.

I will double check that when I get home.

Thanks again for the help!

OK, there is a "IL-2 Sturmovik" setting there, but AFAIK, that is the old, original game, and not the one you should use for 1946.

That might be the problem then.

I did a little searching, and it may also be the Track IR settings in conjunction with the Water effects settings.

Hopefully I will get it sorted out soon. It is a bummer that I had it looking so great, and then had to go ruin it by wanting that extra bit of eye candy.

Oh well, live and learn!

Have you got AA set to "over-ride application" in nvidia settings?

Did you recently install anything? The other day I downloaded and installed a game demo, it sucked and I uninstalled it again in minutes but it had changed settings somewhere and I started getting screen tearing when looking around cockpit with trackir when I next went to fly IL2. Couldn't find what the demo had stuffed up but system restore to previous day fixed it. If you remember when it was how you liked it, system restore points are your friend!

yea this happened to me today, I set my water from 1 to 3 and it made all the edges of my planes and all other things jaggy again, i hope changing it back will help.

Hi,

Well, it would seem that my TrackIR is causing most of the problem. (which is strange because I never had issues before)

I went in last night, double checked my graphics settings, and then went into the game. Everything looked fine with no jagged edges.

I then shut down, restarted, and enabled my TrackIr. Went into the game and the edges were all jagged, almost like all the edges of the aircraft etc were moving or shimmering. (tearing?)

So, I think I have the culprit, but will need to do some searching to figure out how to fix it. Maybe my TrackIr needs a reload?
