Aa-guns realism

Huh, you're right. lol, I must've been thinking about ships then, that's embarassing

I think there's an option to set the experience level for flak gunners in Il-2 Shturmovik stab, but then I could be wrong. [Again]

I really dont find the AA guns to be that accurate as i mentioned in my first post here.
It all depends on hight.
The problem with just getting a few shoots at you in altitude isnt the guns range but the problem is the AI whom spot you range. maxattackrange. its shaped like a dome around the aa and if you arent in the dome then they wont shoot at you while in real life you would spoot thoose incomming bombers way of and be ready and fire as soon as they come into range of the guns.

The range of the guns are accually fairly correct from what i have been reading. You have max range and you have effectiv range.. Like mentioned the bofors has a range of 9-10 km, but it was only effective up to about 2 km .
the 88mm had a effective range/celing of about 8000 meters but could shoot 12000-15000 meters

The only guns that are way out of realistick range in game are the larger ground based guns. as mentioned they only have a max range in game at 6000 meters while some of them accually had a max range of 15000 meters.

Coastal guns that ive been asking for had upto 40000 meters+ range

Thats why making coastal fortresses has no meaning in the game as the battleships can set them self at 7000 meters range and without any risk pound the living daylight out of the coastal forts. not correct compared to real life where ships accually avoided coastal installations if possible.

When making flak possistions around airfields and other imortant positions i use the german way of setting up the defense.
I place them in a triangel around the airfield using 4 88mm in each box(real life was usually 16) pluss 2x 37mm in centre. max attack distance is 5000 meters for the 88 so all 3 boxes are placed so they give somkinda protection for each other and therefor more concentrated flak as enemy aircraft come over the base it self. the boxes where never as i have read placed inside the bases as for the reason was that you rather want the shoot the plane down before it gets over target and not when on target.

In WWII combat aircaft losses broke down more or less like this. For every 1 aircraft lost to enemy action at least 1 was lost in non combat accidents. For every 1 aircraft lost to enemy aircraft fire, 4 were lost to enemy ground fire of all types.

Ground fire at lower levels was obviosuly far more intense since their were more barrels firing and using the big sky theory you were more likely to run into one of those rounds if there were more of them coming up at you.

Real flak was deadly but obviously damaged far more than it destroyed outright. Many planes were damaged and eventually lost because they could not maintain altitude or ran out of fuel due to loss rates. Because of the scope of IL2 its less likely to lose the C due to damage since the return home is 5 minutes in many cases.

Proximity fuses are a whole different animal however. They changethe whole gae entirely. Look at the effetiveness of the 90mm FLak batteries in England targeting the V1's... usually with th combination of radar guidance and prox fuses they were brought down with 2 salvoes from 4 guns.. very effective fire..

I think the biggest gunner issuein IL2is the AI crew gunners not the flak Smile

before we go start requesting a mod, I'd like to point out a few things. For the most part, from photographs, flack fire in an open sky is about as It is in the game.

One thing you guys are seeming to not account for is weather and time. At night and in bad weather, I once accidently flew over berlin in one of my campaigns I'm working on, (theres about 100+ guns around and in the city) at just 4000m and received no fire whatsoever. at day time I'd be blown to peices so small no one could recognise them, of course, I would have realised I was over berlin much sooner too. I also have noticed lost/damaged aircraft are roughly equal to that recorded in the squadron history, although it is still based a lot on luck.

Remember that one AAA gun in the game represents a whole real life battery.
