Monitor dying?
#1

I have an older model Sony 19" monitor. Lately it's been flickering with wild geometric lines after IL2 loads up.
This is the only time it happens. All other programs like Gimp or PSP are OK.
I can usually tell when it's going to happen because the desktop icons will have little lines around them.

This used to happen occasionally but now it's to the point where I can't even load IL2 without this happening. Before, I could restart and it'd fix but now it's much worse.

I am now using a smaller DELL monitor (comp is DELL too) and all is OK with it. Would rather have the larger SONY though.
Is my monitor dying?
Or is there a way to fix it?

Hmm...sounds fishy. Since you can use the DELL monitor ok I doubt the Jimi Hendrix graphics is due to your graphics card failing.

Had a problem with my 3 year old Samsung SyncMaster 204b, backlight would flicker for several minutes before stabilizing when I switched it on. It finally petered out after about a year. Didn't want to discard it so I took it apart, replaced the bulging electrolyte capacitors in the power supply (bulging is a sign of heat damage) - voila! good as new.

I'd suspect a power supply issue in your case too, SMPS (Switch Mode Power Supplies) can be finicky and wear out relatively fast (due to the manufacturers using subspeced components in the high frequency areas).

Hope this helps....

I had the SAME exact issues. Except i had a tiny 15" samaung anD i had a 21" Dell that was broken.

I opened up the dell and did several thing. i replaced resistors that looked burned out. (I don;t think any of them where.) i tightened connections and loosened wire ties i replaced the fuse inside. and finall when i plugged the thing back in i never had a problem again. (I don;t know what did it but it worked Tongue)

Thanks guys. Power supply and overheating might be the problems.
Not sure, but I think everything runs quieter with the Dell monitor. The 13 year old SONY seems like it caused the computer to be noisier. Maybe something got burned out. I'll try and check it.

Same problem now with the newer DELL monitor. Must be graphics issue instead.

With the DELL it doesn't happen all the time but it's like it needs to warm up for a while before everything is OK. And sometimes a restart will fix things but only after it seems the computer has warmed up. Kinda strange.

A while back I bumped up my AGP Radeon 9800 to "best quality" instead of " performance" and I believe this is when things started to go bad.

A couple days ago I reverted back to "best performance" instead of quality and that helped with the DELL but not with the SONY. Sometimes there is no problem at all but it happens most of the time.

Any thoughts.?

Since you get the same problems with two different monitors, I would say it is the graphics card or possibly its drivers. I know Il2 will heat up a graphics card, so the first thing to do is make sure the card's heat sink and fan are dust free, getting good air flow, and that the fan is working properly.

I'll check the fan and for dust but....

This is what happens with the DELL.... it will have those little lines around the icons and mouse pointer so I know not to load IL2 when it does that because it will not work.

When I reboot, then it's all fine and I can do IL2.

Would that be caused by overheating or dust?

So, I'm guessing it's more of a graphics card issue which could quite possibly be the reason.
Earlier this year I tried several different drivers and finally found an older one to get things working properly.
Someone had mentioned to try an older driver because the 9800 is old already.
Would it help if i deleted this driver, cleaned, and reinstalled the same one?

I adjusted some more of the graphics card settings. I think it's something like vertical refresh and something else.
Seems to work fine the last time I used it so problem may be fixed.
I'll make a post if problem persists.

If you're getting graphical artifacts like that, 9 out of 10 times the issue lies with your graphics card. It may be overheating, the drivers might be too old or corrupted, or the card itself might be just about dead.

One question, do you only get weird image artifacts when using a full-screen program?
