Help Please Crash to desktop on installing
#1

I have transferred this post here from the general discussion forum. Below is what I posted there. Since then I was advised where to find the AC installer - but this has not fixed the problem described below. Any help greatly appreciated as I do not know what to try from here.......................

Transferred Post Below

I am running version 4.08m. I went to this page (The link is inoperative)
and followed the instructions to the letter - except that the link to the AC installer is dead so could not install that. (So maybe that is the source of my problems???!!!)

When I go to the FB game folder and click the game exe file to run the game it gets to 5% loaded then crashes back to desktop. It does this consistently no matter what I have tried. Can someone advise please whats up? I have no mods installed apart from the version 6 download from the above page and the wrapper. everything else is stock. The game was working perfectly (before installing the mod) recently as I decided to fire it up again a week ago after a long lapse.

Also is there somewhere on the site that explains succinctly the file / mod structure etc - most download pages assume this knowledge which I do not have. I am however relieved to see that FB is now mod-able. I have had this since it first came out and the lack of ability to mod is probably why I stopped playing it regularly a couple of years back.

thanks Peter

Check that your sound is set at 44.1 kHz.

The most common cause of 5% CTD is a missing or corrupted .SFS file. This can happen if you don't patch to 4.08m before installing the Sound Mod. Did your game work fine before the Sound Mod install?

The game was patched to 4.08m (it shows as such when the start up sequence commences.) Yes it works perfectly before. (In fact I can still play it in its original form from the back up I made before installing the mod.) The sound is set to 44.1 khz.

There are about 47 different .sfs files in the game directory on my count. Can you please explain which one is likely to be the problematic .sfs file and how can I check it to see if it is present and non corrupt?

Unfortunately, I don't know what you could compare them to, except for your backup unmodded 4.08m game. I don't have an install that matches yours. Do a check, for starters, and see how all the .SFS files compare (name and file size) between your modded game and the backup.

I'll make a copy of my unmodded game, apply the same sound mod as you, and see if I can recreate the problem.

I did as above, installed Sound Mod SFX v0.6, wrapper, then AC Installer v3.8, and the game loads and works fine.

Possibly you got a corrupted download of the Sound Mod. It should be 47.2 MB (49,507,815)
After installing, there should be 49 files with a .SFS extension. Did you click "Yes" to overwrite existing files with same name?

Sorry about the delay in responding I have been away form my desk and thanks for all your efforts and your help. There are 47 sfs files in my modded installation (compared with 50 in my unmodded installation) So something is obviously awry - And of course why there should be fewer files than the 49 you specify is a mystery. I cannot conceive of how they could have disappeared. Maybe I should try a clean install by again duplicating my entire installation of FB46 and then re running the mod installer. Or do you think I could copy he SFS files across from the unmodded back up then re run the mod installation over the top of them???????

The unzipped exe file is 47.2 megs in size incidentally and naturally I told it to overwrite. So I do not understand how this could occur.

OK all good now. I copied my clean installation and re ran the mod installers and it worked - I seemed to do everything the same as the first time around so no idea of why I had this issue. Thanks for you help. Much appreciated.
