Yap + Ulithi Lagoon WIP
#1

I am starting a Yap + Ulithi Lagoon map as my first map (I've already gone thru the tutorial). I thought I would take a poll before getting any further into it:

1. Would you rather have this map or a different pacific map?
2. Should I scale down the map to include Guam to the northeast and/or Palau to the southwest?
3. Should I use 1:1 scale?

Thanks in advance for your responses. I'm going to start work some time tomorrow.

Hello, Dave

Good questions you have.

1) A Japanese base on Ulithi saw several strikes by US carriers in WW2 and become a US base for the remainder of the war. Someone should create this map eventually, in my opinion, if no one has started it.

2) It would be a good idea to include something close enough to be practical. You'll have to do the calulating to discover flying time around your map and see if it is a good choice. Both Guam and Palau saw much action.

3) Many map makers use something less than 1:1. I have read about 80%, 3/4, and 1/2 scale maps. This again is a matter of calculating flight times. A flight time of 30 minutes to target is about the limit that most people will accept in missions, according to IL-2 community polls.

I hope that this helps. Smile

Yap is an island. If you make it even smaller than it is it will look ridiculous ... Most of the planes that attacked yap where carrier-based, and Yap had its own airfields... I wont change anything in that.

Batbomb, you have a good point.

The islands can remain the same size. Islands that are clustered near one another should stay the same distance as real life, virtually speaking. Islands that are far apart can have a shortened distance for flyability by cutting the distance according to scale.

I think that sounds like the best option. Also, I'm going to add some additional islands like Woleai to the southeast.

I started that exact map but ran into an issue with the Ulithi portion and stopped to get more instruction. Then my hard drive wiped [mid June] and I have not restarted. It was my third map. I did Nauru in the Central Pacific and the Azores in the Mid Atlantic gap. Let my know if I can help sir.

I have a good start, but I have run into an issue trying to save changes I make to the textures while in the Map Builder in Il-2. I make changes and then go to "File ----> Save". Then when I hit "Exit," re-open the Map Builder and load the map, the work I had previously done is not there. Any ideas?

UPDATE:
I decided to scale down the distances between island groups to roughly half. I have also included Wotje Atoll to the southeast.

you need to move "new" files from saving folder ( ..main game\Maps\Your map) to loading folder ( ..main game\Mods\Mapmods\Maps\Your map) before re-loading .

ok so i've made significant progress but i hit another wall. i'm putting in the reefs and shallow water areas and i keep having the following problem:

Here is the Google Earth image of Yap:

I make the map_c with shallow areas like here:

Then I load the map and the shallow areas have the big missing rectangles in them as seen here:

I don't know why this is happening, but in the console I keep getting the error "Bad water if mapRID = 0" This apparently has something to do with not having a corresponding map_R.tga. I currently don't have a map_R.tga for the map and I don't know what it does or how to make one.
