Awful, Terrible, Unplayable Lag Attacking Ground Targets
#1

Hello guys, I'm experiencing major graphics lag whenever I get near the ground and fire (cannons, rockets, bombs) my weapons. I can't tell if it's AAA fire that's causing the lag, or perhaps that it's the explosion animations.

Here's my config.ini and my dxdiag. My system is a Core 2 Duo 2.2 GHz with 4 GB of RAM and a 9600GT 512MB video card. Vista 64. Game runs beautifully over water, in heavy thick fog, over ground whenever I'm not firing. I experience lag ONLY when firing my weapons and ONLY when firing them toward ground targets. It quite often causes me to miss COMPLETELY. Sad Never had the problem until today...

Here's the conf.ini file. I have the dxdiag if someone wants to see it too.

It's probably a combination of your graphics settings and the map you are flying on. Since UI1.1 came out, many of the default maps received makeovers with increased buildings in towns. This results in the type of lag you report, especially if you "zoom in" when attaching ground targets. Also if you have copious amounts a AAA in the area firing all at once, you will also get the big lag.

Yeah, I have a lot of lag when doing flyby view over towns. Weird thing is, my water=4 and I can fly with lots of ships and planes and aa fire without a glitch. But flying over towns is another story.
one thing that helps a bit is changing ;processafinitymask=1 to processafinitymask=2 (remove the semicolom) tath way Il2 uses core 2 of your processor (Il2 is not made to use more then one cores of processor).

I have a similar problem and 3d smoke is the issue on my system.

When firing at the ground the puffs of smoke/dust cause my system to drop to maybe 10fps.. When dropping bombs on a town, the instant the bomb hits and destroys all the surrounding buildings they all give off a cloud of smoke which completely kills my PC. I'm sure lowering my settings would fix it, but it runs great other then ground attacks.

Your problem sounds just like mine... You say you never had the problem until today? What have you changed that would cause the problem to start today?

I get the same thing. Two things are causing lag and each requires a slightly different fix, both in in-game video settings.

Smoke/Fire/Gunfire causes a massive hit knocking my down to 1-0 FPS. The fix was Setting Landscape Lighting one level down from the best (that should mean setting it to High from Perfect if I remember the setting names right.

But I still would get FPS hits at time in the 7-13 range. Turned out Ground objects would cause that. Setting the Visibilty Distance from High to Medium .

I still get FPS hits with both things, but now it only goes down to about 25 FPS

Crosstalker,

From your description, it seems the problem is your 'Effects' setting. Open your conf file and look for this:

VideoSetupId=0
Water=2
Effects=1

Hi all !

I experienced the same problem with the combination of 2 mods : smoke and fire on the ground.

My computer is litterally "killed" by these mods when I am flying low and having in my range of view (cockpit view) lots of vehicles or/and buildings in fire and/or smoking.

Otherly, (is it an english word ?) my computer runs quite smoothly even if it's a quite old configuration : amd x64 3500+, 7600GT and 3Gb Ram.

Then my advice is to just forget one or both of these mods, even if they're really nice... :-(

Tell us if it works or not

Have a good f(l)ight !

PS sorry for my poor english, I need to improve

I agree with AVIAR - if you are using the latest effects mods (I suspect you are?) then your effects setting should be =0 or =1 - I dont believe theres a compatible setting for Effects=2 at the moment?

I had a similar issue WITHOUT firing a single shot myself (but with friends and foes doing that + AA firing + bombs etc ...) and it took me a very loooong time to find out the culprit

The "funny" thing was that when I accelerated the game using the 2, 4, 8 times speeds I got a slide show ....!!

The culprit was hidden inside my Effects folder (not the one inside the 3DO folder) it is inside the Explodes folder, that comes with the Platinum mod I think

I replaced it with my previous one (that I had backed up like everyone does .... Big Grin ) and now it rocks again

Thanks! I changed the Effects setting. I will let you know what happens.

Hi FZ

Did you pin it down to any effect in particular? If so can you post your solution here ?

... not yet 'cause it took me so loooong to figure it out .. to the point that I suspected my (6 year old) rig and asked a friend to let me install IL2 on his puter (E8400, GTX260, 4 Gigs ram ...!!) but to no avail then i had to remember what mods I had recently added etc ...

I was so happy when I found the "culprit" that i simply deleted all my "new" explodes folder to replace it with my backed-up one
I intend to identify the real bugger as soon as I have tha time to do a trial and error test and be sure I'll post here (allow 2 weeks time like Oleg would say Big Grin )

I suspect either the "air" "cannon" or "materials" folders that I didn't have before or something inside the much larger new "objects" folder

I'm still getting awful lag as I zoom down to attack ground targets. Makes it very hard to hit anything.
