Get your game installed up to v4.08 -- do not install v4.09

Then install Universal Mod Installer -- UI 1.1 from here (The link is inoperative)

Follow instructions given with the download.
When you've got all the UI 1.1 installed make a shortcut on desktop to IL2VersionSwitcher
"C:\Program Files\Ubisoft\IL-2 Sturmovik 1946\Il2VersionSwitcher.exe"

You will find in this options to switch to 6DoF for TrackIR

DO what he said.. with one or two additions. The good news is you are coming back at a very exciting time.. UI 1.2 could be released at any moment.. or in a few days depending on how pessimistic you are

What I would recommend is install the original game from the 1946 DVD. Apply the 4.08M patch. Once you have that create a new Windows folder called "4.08M CLean Installation" Then right click and copy your entire fresh installation and paste it in that new folder. You can run multiple installs you just need a new shortcut for each.

Now, install UI 1.1 to your default path installation. There is a switcher utility to enable 4.09M Beta and TrackIR in the game folder. I would not install ANY other mods at the moment because UI 1.2, Aircraft installer 3.9 and some other goodies are literally just around the corner.. maybe in hours not days.. so play around on Hyper Lobby as is, then install the new files as needed. (You might want to download the newly released Jet Sounds" by Jafa and just save them on your desktop until the 1.2/3.0 are released so you can install them.
