Help please -I appear to be in more strife than Flash Gordon
#1

When 1946 was released I treated it as was originally intended and installed it as an add on over Forgotten Battles.
It has worked fine with no problems that some others seemed to encounter.
However, with 4.09 imminent I thought I would do a clean install of 1946, retaining my original (the folder is still named Forgotten Battles) that has numerous Mods.
When I inserted the 1946 disc it did not give me the option to install, just Uninstall, Read Me and Exit.
I have tried renaming the folder , putting a minus in front of it and still cannot install a second copy.
Advice from other forums is to delete all registry entries of IL2 as this will allow the game to reinstall. Other advice is unless you know what you are doing don't touch the registry. I don't know how to access the registry so I thought I would tackle it from another angle.
I copied the entire IL2 FB folder and renamed it Modded IL2 FB.
I then removed the Mods folder from the original and started the game, The splash screen came up in Russian, the game loaded but then froze and I was unable to access it. I replaced the Mods folder and its working again.
I then tried renaming the Mods folder but the outcome was the same.
Is there anyway I can get the original to work as an un-modded version without un-installing it?

I had this problem once. --- A while ago.

According to my notes either:

Use Revo Uninstaller to uninstall the program, with register scan set to moderate. http://www.revouninstaller.com

or

Use regedit to delete [HKey_Local_Machine\Software\Ubisoft\IL2Sturmovik1946] --- or whatever your Ubisoft reg entry is.

The first option is safest.

Someone else at the time suggested renaming the installation folder I think. Dont know if that would work.

To get your existing setup working again unmodded you probably need to overwrite two files.

files.SFS
il2fb.exe

These need to be the English language versions which came with your original game install.
I am not totally certain that this will work so make a backup.

This is really unnecessary because if you install 1946 and install the UI 1.1 on top of that you will have a modded version with switcher facillity that allows you to switch back to 4.08 unmodded mode. It works really well.

tim, a few observations from your post:
for starters, you already got it wrong by installing 1946 over Forgotten Battles. 1946 does not install over anything, it is a complete, stand-alone package.
How thats affected your install, I'm not sure, but its definitely wrong.
You did the right thing by copying and renaming your entire game folder. Now, you need to uninstall the first version in the normal way, this is the only way(other than messing with your registry) to be able to re-install. Once you have uninstalled it, you will find that if you put the 1946 disc in, it will now give you the option to install.
IL2 will not be able to install a 2nd coopy from the disc if you already have an installed version.
You have already discovered how to have an extra copy of your game - by simply copying the entire game folder to another location, renaming it as you like.
However, until you actually uninstall the version that Windows sees, you won't be able to reinstall.
And forget about Forgotten Battles, all you need is 1946.
Hope this helps.

This program doesn't need to be in the registry. I have IL2 on a separate internal drive and have reinstalled Windows several times. I just double click on the .exe in the root folder and launch or send it to the desktop via shortcut. I have also run it on external drives on other computers. Hyperlobby needs to know where it is and auto installers do to but that's not a real issue.

All done successfully thanks gents.
I renamed and moved the folders, un-installed with Add/Remove programs in the Control Panel then installed 1946. I now have 3 copies, one clean patched to 4.8 waiting for 4.9 release and 2 copies with numerous selected mods but not UI. When UI.2 is released I will install it in one of the modded versions.
Thanks again for all replies.

Further to the above, would it be worth installing UI 1.1 now?
Is UI 2 likely to drop over the top of UI 1.1?

It was previously posted that there will be a v1.1 to v1.2 patch, so yes it is worth installing UI 1.1 now.
v1.1 comes with a version switcher so if you need to you can switch it back to v4.08 unmodded to apply future patches, if necessary.
