Battle of France Mission - Fairey Battle VCs
#1

Salud all.

I came across this story while reading a book about Ginger Lacey; RAF ace. I had not heard the story before and thought it would make a cool mission. So here it is:

The first two Victoria Crosses awarded to RAF crews in WWII were awarded as a result of this mission. There is more detail in the mission briefing. The book about Lacey (who got most of his kills in the Battle of Britain, but saw his first combat in France); and another book by a RAF pilot in France, Paul Richey, graphically describe the circumstances of combat in the intense fighting in May 1940 and are well worth a read if you can find them. Mostly heavily outnumbered, the RAF and French aircrews fought with great courage and inflicted heavy losses on the invading Luftwaffe.

As with all my missions, these are best enjoyed with zuti's MD mod; which you can get here:

Two other Battle of France missions set around the same time can be found here:

You will need the Fairey Battle for the Sedan Bridgehead and Belgian Bridges missions; and the Blenheim 1F fighter is also recommended. All these missions are inspired by real events, but some liberties have been taken to enhance game play.

All these missions are set on Ashes Battle of France map; so you will need to get that too off the AAA site if you don't already have it!

Enjoy!

I'll give the Sedan mission a shot. But I presume I'll be flying a Battle, so I don't rate my chances of survival Sad

Many Thanks Big Grin

Hi Hawkers.

I use zuti mod which means you fly any plane in the plane set. Flew the Sedan mission last night with a couple of mates - I flew a Hurricane with some success. I usually fly blue on that mission, because I love the way the Blenheims break up and burn - lol!

You can fly the Fairey Battle if you want in this one, but you are right - odds are against survival. They do carry a 500lb bomb which can put a bit of a dent in a bridge or take out a tank if you can get close enough.

Enjoy!

If you want to go on about the real heroes of WW11 rather than the hollywood versions, then those Battle boys should be at the top of any list. Flying those crates against vital German targets in France ignored by the supposedly powerful French Airforce, was the closest thing to being a suicider without joining the IJN. VC's and much respect is due..............
