Vista64 New install
#1

Hello,

I've just done a major upgrade to my pc hardware and am going through the labour of installing all the software.

For the life of me I cannot get 1946 to install on Vista64!!!

Has anyone done this? If so can you share your work-arounds that DO work.

Cheers,

Taurus.

taurus , I just went thru the same pain , heres what I did ..create & name a folder in your C drive , I named mine " Games 2 " install disk , in my case I had to go into 'computer' right click on disk , click 'explore' and click on the ' a ' setup launcher ' ..disk will start its install..now very important . it will have a default install folder called C/ Progams X86 or similar ..make sure to change it to install in the folder you made ...install ...then go install 4.08m...then install 4.09m or UI 1.1 ( you know you cant install both together untill they get 4.09m fixed .) all I did was install two copies of Il2 in 2 seperate named folders , 1 was for 4.09m and the other for the UI 1.1 , now when you have figured which IL2 you want to run , you can click on IL2 shortcut to see if game will run , if it doesnt ( you may see disk spinning & PC trying to run ..if it doesnt here is the last thing you do ....go to GAMECopyWorld.com
search for ' IL2 Sturmovik 1946 fixed exe ' install into your folder ...click on your desktop icon ..game will fire up ..thats what I did thru research forums and such ..worked for me ..hope it helps you out . :-? what it boils down too is Oleg didnt have an Vista friendly exe installed with the game & Vista being overprotective of your PC won't allow it to run , unless you go thru the steps .

Good Luck

You can NOT install the game into the default program files (x86)..anything you want to install or update must be done in an entirely diffrent folder then moved into program files (x86)...Some stupid glicth passed over from vista...Hope that gets fixed in the next patch(s)...took a day to figure it out.....

Are we talking Vista or Win7? I'm not sure about Vista64, but in 7/64 (and 32) IL-2 installs just fine - in the program files (x86) folder. Account control settings, maybe? (mine is set wide-open, can't stand the overprotective OS), or try "run as administrator"? Or install in XP compatibility mode? What exactly happens when you try to install/run the game? I was actually amazed at how well IL-2 runs on win7/64 - no slower than on the XP (though I never ran XP64). Good luck.

We are talking window 7 running in 64 bit..I also just found out hyper lobby will not install as well...just locks up...I litteraly had to install IL2 in a seprate folder then move everything back into program files (x86)..whatamess

Many thanks for the replies guys!

I've used the a.exe to at least get the install to start happening. It is a new install of Vista Ultimate 64bit. Shortly followed by the windows 7 final upgrade once it is released.

I will try to install to a new simple directory like you said Bolt and see how that goes. It is taking ages to do anything. Moving 8GB of data around takes time Tongue At least I've still got my old full install on XP to copy over if needed.

Edit: Tried many many times and it still didn't work. Can't get it to work. Time to move on to something else...

This is really odd... I wonder what's different about your Win7 install(?) I'm in win7/64 now, with 2 copies of IL-2 installed without any problems, in the default prog.86 folder & on the desktop. The only thing I could think of is my "account control" is disabled. BTW, Vista Boot Pro (free or shareware, can't remember) works in Win7 as well, so if you want to dual-boot into XP, it's not a problem (if you need to install XP *after* Win7). Check your account control settings... Had no problems installing any apps so far. Love 7 as much as I hated Vista.

Not sure what kind of diffrence it would make, but I'm running windows 7 ultimate full version build 7600..The first thing I noticed is the patch update to ver 4.08 would not "patch"..I read somewhere that vista had the same type of problem and the fix was to install the game into program files (non x86) then move the whole directory to PF(x86) once I saw that the patch worked I repeted the process for the 1.1 ultimate and whadyaknow it worked...As you I dont liked being told by a PC I build,I "cant" do something....poof goes the account control....I'm not saying everyone will have these issues,Just that this worked for me...BTW I had the DVD of the game Not a D/L from a site..I made a DVD of the ult 1.1 and ran that ..worked fine that way for me..not to mention saving me amost a gig of space.

hello,

Tried the install to a different directory. Then copied it across into the (x86) directory and it works! Big Grin Big Grin Big Grin Big Grin

Many thanks for helping us get flying again!!!!

Heh, this kind'a explains things (BTW, lucky you! The $$$ build of Ultimate! I'm still running the RC7100, hoping against hope that I can avoid forking over the $$$ before the thing expires...)
Here's what i think the glitches are:
A whole bunch of apps, especially older ones, try to install themselves to C:/.../program files/ (not prog(86)), with either *not* giving you a choice to change the dir., or forgetting that we just click the "next" button as fast as we can (though having the time to check the "I Agree" button after carefully reading the 20 page EULA). It's strange that M$ didn't choose to name the prog. folders "Program Files" and "Program Files(64)" - would'a saved people some headaches... OTOH, it doesn't really matter which folder the apps install to, so having 2 prog folders is just confusing...
And yeah, i've got the web install, so, if i remember right, had to patch it to install further patches & mods.
At least things make sense now. (and the coffee's finally kickin' in, time to start the day)
