African-American Voice Pack Tuskegee Airmen for IL-2
#1

Hey guys,
I was thinking about adding an African-American voice/speech pack to the game for the Tuskegee Airmen (332nd Fighter Group 99th Fighter Squadron) in the game. There already are Polish voices for the RAF Polish squadrons, so why can't there be any African-American voices for these pilots. Besides, it would add some variety to the bland American voices alreay in the game that sound incredibly boring. Anyway, are there any African-American people willing to volunteer to add voices or do this voice pack? It would be nice. Words like, "Two clear my tail" with a different accent. IT'S SO COOL! OH YEAH! Big Grin
:newcool: The Southern voices in the game would add variety to it, I think. Let's try it. I think it would be so cool. Let's add New York voices, too. Let's represent every facet of America, shall we?

Im all for having different dialects and languages spoken ingame, but what makes you think that a tuskegee airman would speak any differently than any other fighterpilot? Not every african-american talk like 50 cent you know ;-) , at least back in the 40's when they already had enough problems being a normal part of society, as Caucasians were.

Personally I think a more generalized cross section of an American speech pack would be more apt.

Let's say we get a few from the Midwest, Deep South, Bronx, New Jersey ...

This in my opinion would be much more effective and accurate.

I agree.... as the sim is now it would be hard to seperate the voices.. Perhaps what would be even better would be if a mod could be created that would allow for more than one set of voice files to choose from for the same side.

I understand what you mean Patchman.... and Richard... back then no one spoke like 50 cent..

In game by selecting country you select voice pack.Maybe if we change that, make country selection and squadron selection to determine what voice pack will be used. That way we could have voice packs for individual squadrons Smile
If you select just country with no squadron, you get default country voice pack. But if you select squadron you get that squadrons voice pack.

This might be worth looking into Wink

As interesting as that sounds, have you looked at how many squadrons there are in the game? Hundreds. That's hundreds of voice packs that would have to be made and there are dozens and dozens of wav files just for the generic voices. That would equate to a voice pack about as large as the entire UI1.1 mod pack all by itself.

I like the concept, but I think it needs to be kept to a manageable level. Here's an example. Since we are talking about the Tuskegee Airmen, let's use them. We already know they were an all black squadron. The pilots came from all over so they too would have different accents based on the location they grew up in. An average WWII fighter squadron had somewhere around, what, 20 to 30 pilots (just guessing based on today's requirements)? That could be 20 to 30 different dialects and/or accents. Then you have all the wav files that need to be recorded. You have 9 "Actors" folders with from 9 to 238 wav files in the folders. That's a lot of recording.

But, don't let me stop you. If you are willing to do it and can find enough folks to help, then by all means, go for it. I would use it.

Might be simpler to just back up your current speech pack and drop another in.

Yeah, i know Smile The point i was trying to make was that their dialect obviously depended on where they grew up, i dont think that they necessarily had a "black" way of speaking english y'know?

Grant,I'm not talking about a voice pack for every squadron. That kind of mod would give you option to make a custom voice pack for some squadron.Squadron without voice packs would use generic one for that country.

So.. what does this mean that you said? I took it to mean a voice pack for each squadron.
