UI 1.2 Sounds
#1

The new sounds in UI 1.2 are painful. It would be greatly appreciated if a switcher could be made to restore the IL2 original sounds. Then the user has the option to choose which sound set he/she prefers.

a thread/post/document is in the works to show you how to modify them yourselves to your liking.

in the mean time, if you have the knowlodge, this is were the data lives

these files here (you can edit them in notepad)
C:\Program Files\Ubisoft\IL-2 Sturmovik 1946 mod\files\presets\sounds

point to these files here
C:\Program Files\Ubisoft\IL-2 Sturmovik 1946 mod\files\Samples

it may be simpler to take a sound you like, name the same as the exsisting one, and replace it.

sorry for the short reply, but very busy at the moment.

1 bug that has been found is that the internal sounds of some guns and the external sounds of them have been switched accidently.

there are some that make me grit my teeth. Part of me wonders if they are this distorted from an error in the download.

My internal f4f sound (PrattWhitney_1830_2701.wav) sounded really chewed up.

I wanted to know if this was just me, or if it was the recording. I don't think sounds like that should even be put into the game. It can really ruin the rep of your sound mod. Its sort of like the weakest link.

My experience with modding sounds is that people are more finicky about their weapons sounds, anyhow, but i hate hearing crackles or white noise and bit crushing with in the engine noises.

On a more positive note, some sounds are really good. There are some added engine noises for when the plane goes into a stall, and added wind noise.
For me its a worthwhile mod, that i will continue to add to.

again, one of the goals for the 1.2 was to make it easier for the player to change out the sounds to their liking. it's now very easy to do and won't cause you to fail CR2 2 when you join a server that has it turned on.

Looking foward to the old sounds then. Its good that this sort of option was designed into UI 1.2 now just need to figure out how to do it.

I was getting background static/loss of quality in many of the engine sounds, and serious popping and crackling in others. In addition, levels were weird with guns sounding quiet in comparison to engines. I opened up the sound settings from within Il-2 and turned down master volume and objects volume to somewhat less than half and turned up voices volume to max (I always have music off). I have to have my speakers at a higher volume level than normal, but all the distortion is gone and engine volume sounds more normal. 50 cals still sound weird to me, but that may be a specific bug as mentioned. I'm not enamored with all the sounds, but they certainly don't sound bad.

... gents those are Jafa sounds !

until Tiger33 publishes his pack they are really the very best there is !

now each system requires additional tweaking so crackles and rest of possible stuff can get avoided .

Heck after switching from audigy2 to my onboard sound card ( Asus P5Q deluxe Mboard) i had to re-tweak all sounds all over again .

The modded engine sounds, since the begining, are very limited in variation. Take a hold of your throttle and start advancing it while you watch the RPM gauge and listening to the engine sound. At best there are 4 or 5 changes.
Now fire up the standard 4.08 or 4.09 IL2 and do the same thing. You will notice a change of sound for almost every small tik mark on your RPM gauge.

I really feel that I am gunning up the engine or throttling back with the original sounds.

If the modded sounds had such a dynamic variation, I would not mind them.

However, I am glad and greatfull the UI 1.2 team was so thoughful to try and disassociate the sounds from being checked with CRT=2.

Waiting for the instructions with great anticipation.

Many thanks

That's because there are only 4 or 5 files governing each engine's sounds, modded or otherwise. If you think there's some kind of magic difference between the way the original engine sounds are set up vs. the modded ones, you're in for a surprise. Smile

Its been my experience that the modded sounds are potentially better.

This potential relies on the quality of the recording used in the wav file, as well as the time put into the presets to make sure the levels are properly done.

I think some sounds still need more work while others are really well done and i would label as final production quality.

My point is some of these sounds are better left out. I'd rather hear the default than a chewed up bit file.

I know i can replace them, which is great, but for someone else that might be a real hassel.

In UI1.1 there were two engine sounds which i really hated

- the Jumo samples, used for example on the Ta152 and (not engine of course - sound only) on the Me410;

- Sabre used on Tempest.

They were way too loud, Sabre too pitched to work with it for longer than a few minutes. The Jumo was also very unpleasant to hear, very low 'hummm' which caused sound distortions (like EAX bug, but the EAX was off...).

So I opened the Sabre samples in Nero Wav Editor and lowered the volume level by some 10-15 dB (it's really a lot), which helped somewhat. This way didn't help much in Jumo, so I replaced it by Daimler-Benz samples. And I was very pleased with it.

NOW, IN UI1.2 the list of VERY UNPLEASANT sounds is much wider Cry

Few examples: B-29 (R-3350), Ponies, Jug (R-2800), Spitfire XIV (Griffon), Go-229.

ALSO the sound of MK108 is way more silent than a MG151/20, I didn't check other weapons sounds, beacuse I had to revert to UI1.1 - saving my ears

The best solution to all those sound circumstances would be offering the user an option to choose between stock 4.08 and modded sounds, like a switcher 4.08 -> MOD 4.09 we have now.

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE give us an opprtunity to decide what sounds we want to use...

So where is the difference between the modded sounds lack of variation and "aliveness" of the original sound attributed to?

I must agree the 1.2 sounds are horrible!!! But when I try to reinstall the JAFA 1,2, and Yak Sounds...none of them work....its still the crappy 1.2 sounds. I just put all the PRS in the preset folder and SAMPLES in the sample folder like I have before...it seems to overwrite them, but its not changing anything I still have the bad 1.2 sounds???Did the change the names of all the sound files??

Just so everyone knows ...

I was shear hell trying to make one set of prs files from get this .... 6 sound pack going from mod activator to 1.1

In 1.2 things are a bit simpler but the draw back is that we needed a standard set of names sound modders could hook to rather that editing the engine files which throw out crt2 compliancy.

Now i know some people don't give a hoot about crt2 but then again many do care. The solution is as you now find it in 1.2 allowing both communities the opportunity to change the prs contents, provide the desired wav files and keep the same buttons.

The other way is kind of the tail wagging the dog approach while 1.2 is the dog wagging the tail.

Just hang in there new sounds will be appearing including old game default sounds
