Well, everyone around here knows how much of a Mustang fan I am so I hope this will all make sense. I have recently been researching the P-51D-5NA. In short, it was the first P-51D sub-variant to be used operationally and made it just in time to participate in the Invasion of Europe. It looks rather nice without the dorsal fin and actually had some handling problems that required the dorsal fin be applied. Anyways, most all of them are in invasion stripes.



I'd love to see Wolf make this one, but that's besides the point. Lt. Wolf is actually going to make a P-51H. Well, the P-51H was supposed to go into service in Europe, but the war ended too quickly so it was going to be the primary escort aircraft along with the P-47N. So, for what-if scenarios, the P-51H's would carry over the paint schemes from the 8th and 9th AF P-51D's fairly well and alot of the P-51H's in the Pacific would have the Tokyo Club paint schemes, but would the P-51H, along with the rest of the aircraft carry invasion stripes?

Would the USAAF, RAF, RCAF, RAAF, RNZAF, and all the other Allied Forces participating in Operation Downfall carry invasion stripes. Personally, I think they would, but what do you guys think... This question applies to all fighters, smalls, mediums, heavies, divers, transports and cargos, observation, gliders, and helis.

Cool, but it's not the same as having a P-51D-5NA by Wolf. Anyways, before this gets more off track of what I wanted to find out...

Simply, would the Allied aircraft participating in the Invasion of Japan carry invasion stripes?

propably not the same kind of stripes, though possibly something similar. For the push into the Netherlands, aircraft carried different invasion markings to those ones used in overlord, so the were likely be some sort of invasion markings for a push into japan, but not the same as the overlord invasion stripes.

The ones used in Market Garden were exactly the same as the ones used in Overlord since the aircraft were the same and just kept their stripes. From what I can tell, the stripes the Brits used in Korea were pretty close to these or exactly like them. The only big change is the Suez opps in 1956 where they used yellow and black stripes.

They put Invasion Stripes on the planes because the Allies hadn't figured out yet how to put big red floating numbers over the planes to ID them.

Well, thanks Bong... I was actually looking for a realistic answer. When we finally get the P-51H-NA and the P-47N-RE I was going to make an Operation Olympic campaign, but I need to know what kind of markings I should put on the planes. I'm thinking that the black and white stripes would be used on all aircraft including heavy bombers since they flew at such low altitudes in the Pacific, but I'd like to know what everyone else thinks. On the note of the bombers, it was thought of as un-necessary to have invasion stripes on them for Europe since they operated at very high altitudes.
