Details on the new P-51D variants
#1

I'm trying to get some detail on the P-51D models - P-51D-5 NT, -20 NA, -20 NT, -25 NA, -30 NA: what were the differences between each model? I know that the NA was for North American Aviation and NT for Dallas plant built models but what upgrades were to each of the versions?

Scratch the D-5NT and hope for the D-5NA which was basically a P-51B with a bubble canopy and two more guns.

The P-51D-10NA had the dorsal fin installed after it was first used on the ETF-51D which was a P-51D-5NA modified for full carrier operations.

The P-51D-20NA was the 10NA with the new K-14 gyroscopic "ace-maker" gunsight.

The P-51D-25NA introduced rocket stubs. The P-51D-30NA was pretty much the same thing...

You're right about what NA and NT mean and the Dallas canopy was installed on some of the NT Mustangs. The Dallas canopy was just an unintended variation made by different batch runs of the canopies, but most people think that it was special for the P-51K.

The P-51K was a P-51D with an Aeroproduts propellor that hindered performance in the early versions and slightly helped in the later versions due to the balance of the prop that was fixed over time. The P-51K-1NT was the equivalent of the P-51D-15NA, the P-51K-5NT of the P-51D-20NA, the P-51K-10NT of the P-51D-25NA, the P-51K-15NT of the P-51D-30NA.

Thanks Deac. So the D-5NT was a P-51B with the bubble canopy and 2 extra guns - did it have the dorsal fin fillet? The in game model has it.

Is there a good book you recommend that has this type of detail?

Here is some details on the orginal IL-2 P-51D-5 performance vs. a real world P-51D-5 performance. I decided to test it in that there was alot of nuckle heads in the HL lobby saying that it was 13kph TOO FAST and thus there was no reason for AAA to add new mustangs. Turns out the orginal -5 is close to 25mph TOO SLOW! Thus the AAA boys were more than justified in adding the new stangs IMHO!

Here is the link

Uh, yeah it wasn't supposed to have the dorsal fin originally, but alot of them were retrofitted to old P-51D-5's. Uh, I would suggest "Mustang Designer: Edgar Schmued and the P-51..."

"P-51 Mustang in Action" Squadron/Signal publications No.45 isn't too bad either. Explains stang versions with ALOT of pics and explains most of the small changes between variants.

There is a mod that removes the Dorsal Fin from the D-5

No FM change and none of the fine updates seen with the new Mustangs which is why I'm hoping for the P-51D-5NA to be made by Lt. Wolf and his team...

Be cool if they could make a new slot and adj the FM such that it has a little more 'play' in the yaw
