It looks verry good exept for the mountain sticking up that looks cartoonish
Here i think you have to change the textures for the moutain.
Google earth where you can go down and look at the mountain in profile might be away to see how it looks at eye hight and not from birds wiuev??

Good luck anyway and looking forward to seing the finnished resoult!Smile

hum i'm afraid that just repaint would not be enough...It would be better if someone here take is 3dsmax and do it again from zero. With a nicer shape i could produce a nice mount. I have to watch what fabianfred send me, he seems to have the solution.

I hope

Hey fabianfred...i tested you Suribachi mount.....that's nice. Really better, it looks less to a potato now. I reworked the file in charge of the elevation in the map, now the ground join the mount with a more natural line. I'll have to repaint it with hight resolution textures now.

Just in case, i know you are busy with another map...could you make one with a more accurate 3D model?

watch here the result (pics with repainted Suribachi later  ...) :

Imagine the Suribachi already repainted, what do you think about the global shape guys ?

Lets the what we get with repainted mount.

Redko, I think it looks really good as a current Iwo Jima.

But one thought about this map, mate: in 1945, during the battle this small island was bombed so heavily and densely, that the thin layer of ground and vegetation that was before as it is now after 60 years of peace, was removed showing the dark volcanic ground underneath in many places, the same that is present on the island's beaches. Not to talk about the burnt vegetation.

This is depicted in Flags of our Fathers and in the late scenes of Letters from Iwo Jima, in my opinion Clint Eastwood gave a correct dark burnt atmosphere to the films. And obviously the sand of the beaches was as dark as now. Also the ground of the airstrips, free from grass, would be dark I think.

Is just a thought, mate Smile

Google Earth images simply will not suffice for Iwo Jima in 1945, particulary pre- and during invasion. It was a very small area of land that saw immense violence. Looking at the historical photos, vast changes have occurred. The original Japanese airfields are nearly invisible, the road network has been substantially altered, there are signs of a great deal of agriculture (rice production?) that is no longer present (thus even nailing the modern vegetation perfectly may not bring us any closer to reality), and a number of modern structures have popped up around the island. It's an awesome start, but I think a great deal of "hand-drawn" textures will be needed for historical reproduction.

Regarding the airfields, most of the historical photos show them as being fairly light in shade. I would not assume that the island is all dark beneath the vegetation. Black sand beaches can be seen in many places with a great variety of different soils and rocks. The only prerequisite is volcanoes! Even Suribachi shows striking contrast between dark and very light materials (volcanic rock of various colors and ash).

Hi WhiteCat. Smile
We know that and we will work it. Just a pre-beta version for the moment. I concentrate efforts first on the problem of Suribachi mount. In the same way some pics shows trees........ti will disapear for release.

I've been searching for some Iwo Jima colour images which were made during the battle and as you can see the volcano isn't dark coloured at all and still vegetation on it. On the island itself I see some green shrubs and grass as shown on image number one.

EDIT: look at these colour footages of the invasion of Iwo Jima. The coastline has dark volcanic sand but more inland shrubs, high grass and even a lot of palmtrees. (Note: consists some graphic images :!: )

I guess you're right, Lejo & akdavis. Maybe not so dark after all, and the first photograph of Lejo about the shrubs is crucial, I hadn't see it yet. Anyway in that photograph the ground seems dark (the photo is very light). But is true that the mount is a combination of grass and light rock, and the strips seem indeed light. Also it's interesting the sign of agriculture.

Well, in any case the reality seems more near to the new textures than the original ones, good work redko.

ok. but i have to reintegrate the beatches, the airfiels, and want to mix grey sand and vegetation textures. i'm looking for nice grey volcanic textures, and really alf desapeared/destroyed textures for airfields

My father was given a duplicate set of prints of pictures taken during the invasion. He was a Coast Guard Motor Machinist aboard the LST 764. This LST had embarked parts of a Marine Artillery Division and had two LCVP's. He was part of the LCVP crew and his job was to run the engine. The pictures he has show IWO as little more than moonscape including the area where there is a picture of the original flag that was put on top of Suribachi. My father said that the beaches were black ash and lacked all vegetaition as far as the eye can see.

Of course. That's the collective representation of this island. They were bombing it, it was an inferno. The question is it texture as a moon world or in the prewar state?

I will post soon pics of repainted mount Suribachi, i will need your comments.

I would vote for moon world, but I'll also be happy with at least black beaches only Smile

Good question. Moonscape would cool, if anything because it would be different in Il-2. However pre-invasion probably fits Il-2 better since it seems highly unlikely the airfields were operational after the bombardment and most of the air combat over Iwo was B-29 intercepts and defense against bomber and carrier strikes.
