#1

yesterday I installed ubuntu linux as a dual boot... I can boot into my Windows 7 or XP or Ubuntu

yesterday I also started to download the new UltraPack 1.8 via torrent...but it was very slow..... I left it running overnight and came back to find I had got a virus on my XP which shut down all my anti-virus software and when i tried to download and run a trojan remover that stopped too.....
I booted into Win7 to see if I could clean it from there but the same happened to my Win7

so I went into Linux Ubuntu...where I am now...... trying to find out how I can clean my windows instals from here

only installed ubuntu yesterday so not very familiar with it....

tried to find some on-line scanners...but everything seems to be for windows

You won't find virus software for Ubuntu. Unix/Linux was designed with security in mind from the start, user permissions and so on. You have to switch user to the superuser to do any real damage to a Linux installation, even deliberately. Of course, it's possible to install programs that use exploits to get around this but the nature of open source software means that security holes are quickly fixed (sometimes within hours). My dad had this same problem, we spent ages looking for software to fix Windows from Ubuntu on his machine, couldn't find a thing. I guess it's not a priority of Linux users to write programs to fix Windows installations. :p
What you COULD do is boot into Ubuntu, download a trojan remover, move it onto your Windows partition and then boot back into Windows and run it. Try that and tell me if it works, and if you need any help with those steps give me a shout.

Well ....I got it cured OK

Thanks to my Ubuntu install i was able to ask questions and get back into Windows in safe mode and wipe out the little buggers with several tools after running an AV prog from linux.....

We buddhists are meant to show compassion for all.... but the people who create these viruses (virii)? are going to come back as cockroaches I'm sure Confusedhock:

****** You won't find virus software for Ubuntu. *****

Maybe not for Ubuntu, or other Linux distros per se, but ......

http://www.google.com/linux?hl=en&q=anti...rt=10&sa=N

shows many anti virus companies have started making versions for linux.

BTW, http://www.google.com/linux is linux specific google.

ClamAV, is an opensource version, that IIAC, was developed specifically for linux, and later was ported to windows. I have been using it for several years.

Why ? Because I have to occasionally download things, for windows. Drivers, software, and other stuff.

Just Download, Right Click the file or folder, and then Scan for Viruses it's a wonderful thing.

You can install it thru Synaptic, Aptget, Debpkg, etc ....

I have been dual booting linux/ Windows since 1994. The only reason windows is installed on ANY of my puters, is for gaming. And I never game online with Windows. None of my computers have accessed the internet from windows, since around 95 or 96. At all, never, no how, Period.

Final note, we havent had a virus since 94.[/url]

And you are right, Linux doesnt need anti-virus, but there are still a lot of us dual/ multi booters out there. Maybe one day the game makers will follow the lead of some that have already started making Linux versions of their games .... Hint hint
