How to create multiple installs of IL-2?
#1

Hello All,

The title says it all. I would like to create a fresh, un-modded install of IL-2 1946 without uninstalling my modded version of the game. I found a guide by CirX (viewtopic.php?t=18513&highlight=multiple+installs), but I don't seem to understand it. According to this, after all is said and done following the instructions, the fresh versions of IL-2 1946 won't be playable. That's the part I didn't understand. Is there another way to do this?
Any help with this would be much appreciated.

Thanks,

RB

As far as I know you can delete the MODS and files folders, temporarily or send them to Recycle Bin, copy what's left, paste and rename it somewhere, and then restore your deleted files. Say your root folder is Il2 1946: delete MODS and files folder, and then copy Il2 1946, paste it underneath the original game and it will call itself Copy of Il2 1946, then rename it to what you want, and restore MODS and files. I haven't tried this myself but when you delete MODS and files folders the game is, as far as I know, what a fresh install would be.

Find the file folder that contains the game it will probably be under program files or in the ubisoft folder. right click and copy this folder and paste it on your desktop. Rename the folder to something like IL2 modded. Now go to add and remove programs and tell it to remove IL2 from your computer. After it has completed the uninstall go to the ubisoft folder and delete any files or folders that the uninstall didn't get. If you go to your folder that you saved on the desktop and double click on the IL2 executable it will run your modded version. You can now do a clean install of Il2 on your computer and run this version from its executable, which will be found in the ubisoft/IL2 1946 folder or something similar.

You don't need to do all that ,just go to the program files rename the main game folder to something other than IL1-1946, then do the uninstall, then you can reinstall as many copies as you want to your main hard drive,as long as you rename the main game folder each time.

No need to uninstall even . Ive just copy/pasted modded and unmodded versions through the years.

When my old rig crashed I was running mods from a USB external drive without any problems + vanilla on a drive transplanted into my backup rig. IL2 was never even installed under the OS on that machine.

Il2's root folder can be whatever name you choose. Just remember to direct Hyperlobby (if you use it) to the one you need to use.

Easiest way is to copy your existing root folder (modded install) into a new location then delete the Mods and replace il2.exe and il2fb.exe with the vanilla no CD exe

Have you tried creating a so-called junction point (e.g. with Vista)? It acts like a soft link and you just point the link to another location. Not tried it myself, but it could be a smart way to have different installs or point it to another disk or partition.

Just install the IL-2 1946 game, copy that map to several places on your harddisk(depends of how much installs you want) and make different shortcuts on
your desktop.. And put on every install other mods/modpacks Big Grin

That's how I did it, and it worked out pretty well

Ok guys I think some of us has to consider a few significant points here.

  1. Where did you get the game from? Download or disk?

  2. Did this the download or disk came pre-cracked?

  3. Which OS do you use (Trust me there's a difference)

Now for what I recommend.

First off, try this if you have a downloaded copy or disk copy (Not Pre-cracked) then I'd recommend a fresh installation for this then before any patching or what ever, copy the game root folder into another folder of your choice. (E.g, Documents, Desktop) Just have a folder prepared for it, (IL-2 1946 Documents, etc...) I've don't this on a Dell Dimension 3000 with a 34 GB Hardrive and on Windows XP. It worked! I've downloaded it from D2D.(Note: D2D had already patched the game to 4.08m)
It's been known to allow you to install another whole copy of the game but then prompts you for an activation code

From the disk you'll have the freedom to use installer again but some people have reported that if you are using the Installer again, it will just promt you to delete and replace the current game installed. Some people say if you use the installer and was prompted to browse to another folder to install it would do it no problem, perhaps different OS? (not Verified)

This is where the second option come in.(Strongly Recommend):!:

Have either a crack disk or pre-cracked copy. Trusting you have enough room, the pre-crack install would be installed in either another hard drive say like an external and you would copy over all the from there to an place of your choice. This allow me to install 4 copies. Simply from a fresh 4.07m copy.

If not already cracked the I suppose using a crack disk for each install that you intend to use however this has not been tested or confirmed to work.

Now this was all done with both windows XP and Vista as I had to copy over an already modded copy of the game to another computer and it worked no problem!

Just do a clean install and the make as many copies as you need right into the main directory and then path and mod as needed.

If you have the disk just rename the main folder to .. say.. IL2 SturmovikOLD.. and just install. I have two versions of the sim in the same UBI folder.. one is named C:\Program Files\Ubisoft\IL2Sturmovik 1946.. which is the version that has the UI 1.2 and the other is C:\Program Files\Ubisoft\IL-2 Sturmovik 1946 UP for the UltraPack.. and when the 4.1 comes out I will rename the main folder and reinstall 46 one more time.. I'll probably delete the UI version and either make the HSFX 4.1 or the UP version my main one..
