It is, sort of
In short they wanted to put a laminar flow wing on a Spitfire in increase speed and moveability, but the new wing design resulted in major structural modifications around the fuselage. Around the same time they where ask to improve the pilots view over the nose, with all these modification it was now a new plane so they gave it a new name "Spiteful".
Test showed that the Spiteful did not have any increased performance over the Spitfire, if fact it showed decreased performance at low speeds. How ever the new laminar flow wing went on to be used on the Supermarine Attacker.
Go to show that R. J. Mitchell more or less got it right all them years befor
