MAP ag_Aleutians - update to version 2.0
#1

Here are the files necessary to update the ag_Aleutians map to version 2.0, hopefully the final version.

Prompted by the great addition of a new shallow water texture by bombsaway, I thought it time to redo the map and update it as much as possible. This version now has

-a new and expanded actors.static file, with all towns/harbors (and one new addition) completely redone from scratch so they appear more Alaskan than in the first versions
-more isolated dwellings placed on the islands
-removed several objects 'swimming' in the ocean
-maps_h, maps_c and map_t all revamped and corrected in places
-added additional textures
-named several terrain features

If you already have this map, named either as 'Aleutians' or 'ag_Aleutians' just unzip the contents of the rarfile and place the contents of:
...MODS/mapmods/maps/ag_Aleutians...
into the folder containing your old version of this map.

Backup first just out of precaution, but otherwise overwrite when asked.

If you have not previously installed this map, the present download will function as a standalone install. You do not need any previous files or downloads.

The contents of the _Tex folder, should be placed in the respective subfolders of your own _Tex folder. You will probably already have most of these textures installed, as they are standard winter textures, but one or 2 have been added, so out of precaution, you should make sure all textures are in their correct place.

NOTE

I put the wrong beach texture into the main download link. Please take the textures from this link (avalabeachROCK.tga), and put it into your folder
..._Tex/water

The water textures are bombsaway's work ...all the credit for these goes to him and also the credit for making me realize the map could use a good working over. And it may sound odd, but it's also thanks to bombsaway that I've actually started flying on the Aleutians map. I usually make a map, and after it's posted never even use it again to fly in ... probably from being too fearful of finding awful shortcomings ...

Thank you Agracier but it was your map that gave me the inspiration to make this texture. To be honest when I first started makeing textures, it was your Aleutians map that I first experimented with high detail shallow textures even before I came out with the reef texture. I just wasnt ever happy with one until this new one.
Here are some shots of my first attempts.

Then recently I tried this one but I think I showed you this one by pm.

OMG and holy cow. I possible can't keep track about how many maps you have already made. You must combine them as 1 major package

Not that many. Besides, this was one of my first and was made as an idea conceived by Cracken - who has provided many a good suggestion on which areas in the world to map.

And many are now rather bungling examples of maps that really need updating, both in the department of populating and in texturing. That is why it is so nice to see other members contributing to the process of map making. Especially since no one person alone can be proficient in all the many diverse aspects of map making.

I downloaded the new Aleutian map.
It is gorgeous and me likes those water .tgas.

Just 1 thing:

It would be wise to use new filestructure. Now all the textures goes to root of texture folder and they are PITA to find if necessary.
I know that this may sound like i'm nagging, but believe me, it is easier to find those textures and avoid any errores like using same name and stuff like that, if everybody follows this prefix system.

At least when map comes official AAA mapmod, it is necessary.

What makes thinks complicated is the fact that some of the previous modded textures can be found at _Tex land, water nad so on...
So some modders are used to that structure and it is not easy to change that.

If for excample some dude names his water to shallow_1.tga and somebody else does it too, you see unwanted results. But if he puts it to _Tex/prefix/water/shallow_1, no problems.
You get the point.

And when i'm making installer or checking the map for official map, it saves helluva lot of my precious time! No need to check the all the texture folder, except one

I named them BA_Shallows_Aleu_v1.tga so I guess my prefix is BA or is that one taken? Is that what you mean? I want to makeit easier. Any suggestions would be great. Big Grin

I think he means the way i organized the textures and the load.ini. Since these were all standard textures, yours aside, I left them in the folders ..._Tex/land/winter ... and _Tex/water ... as they come in the normal install.

The thing is this.
Put all textures that you have made in 1 folder. (You can use subfolders inside that9. Name it to BA and drop it to _Tex root folder:
\Ubisoft\IL-2 Sturmovik 1946\MODS\MapMods\Maps\_Tex\BA.
Of course you need to edit load.iniConfused for that structure too, so that IL2 finds your textures.

By the way - I was wondering if anyone would pick it up on their own. I added a small joke or homage of sorts (depends on how you look at it) in the map.

If anyone can pick it up and especially describe what it alludes to, then I'll see about something extra in the way of maps for the member who makes the catch ...
