I would like to know if there is a way of turning up the sound for different effects such as explosions, machineguns ,engine sounds etc

If you mean ways to turn up the sound anything other than turning it up in the games sound menu or turning your headphones volume to max then I would say no.But you can take the individual wav files and increase the volume on them,I've done it with windows movie maker and it seems to work fine,just remember not to increase the volume to much or all you'll here is a lot of crackling noises.There is also some other sound editing programs on the net you can get for free check Google for them.
