How to have mod and unmodded games on PC?
#1

I have just saved my 4.09beta UI 1.1 modded game to desktop and "uninstalled" so that I could do a fresh 1946 install and patch it up, to have a "clean" 4.09m game...which I did.

I'd like to now place my 1.1 game in the ubisoft folder next to my clean 4.09m game, but since I renamed the 1.1 game ( to prevent it from being uninstalled ) I'm sure the various version switchers for it won't work since they are pathed to the normal game location, with the game name being the standard "IL-2 Sturmovik 1946" of my stock game.

If I rename my stock game, will the desktop icon not work? If I name my modded 1.1 game to the stock game's name, won't that cause a conflict with the stock game?

I just want to be able to fly 4.09m online, and use the 1.1 modded game to play offline, and also host a small online sessions with 3 or 4 other flyers who also have 1.1.

Any way to do this?

Thanks.

I have done it like this:

I installed IL-2 clean
I copied the whole map to My Documents.
Then, I made a new map, called IL-2 1946 UI.1.2, and then, put all the files of the standard game in that map, and started modding

Modded IL-2 UI 1.2 - Map is called IL-2 1946 UI.1.2

Unmodded(clean) IL-2 - Map is called IL-2 1946.

I put them in my D drive.. So I got the next thing:

D:\IL-2 1946 UI.1.2.
D:\IL-2 1946.

You have to put 2 different desktop icons on your desktop...Like me, I called them like my map folders..

Hope this will explain a bit

Cheers!

You can name the game root folder anything you like. Just create shortcuts to the il2FB. exe (R.click -"create shortcut") and cut and paste them to desktop.

example-

"C:\Program Files\Ubisoft\IL-2 Sturmovik 1946\il2fb.exe" - default path standard il2
"C:\Program Files\UI mods'46\il2fb.exe" - modded install path

Yellow = Root folder for game

You can change path in shortcuts by R.click / properties - then just edit.
You can also R.click/Rename the shortcut.

So in summary - The shortcut can be any name you choose. The Root Folder can be any name you choose.

Il2fb.exe (and il2.exe) must never have its name changed.

Don't mix modded and un-modded in the same folder - unless you're using JSGME ; which is probably the best solution unless you have 2 copies of Il2 installed.

Neither the "map" discussion nor the comments about 'uninstalling', then re-installing, patching, etc are clear to me.

FWIW, my experience is this:
I have a lot of installations. I just make a desktop shortcut to the il2fb.exe of each....then a simple click loads that version. they all work fine.

and BACKUp versions...If I am told that a new MOD package requires a baseline of 4.08m, or 4.09m...or other, I simply apply the new MOD package to the appropriate base in my backup folder, then simply name and place that new "installation' in my root D:\ drive as shown above.

Someday I hope I can return to having just one version, most likely UP2.0 (patched as time goes by). Maybe just keepthe single baseline 4.08m version, just in case.

No switchers.

Alright then, I've succeeded. In a sense, you were all right. Thanks for the feedback/advice.

I placed the modded UI 1.1 game in the ubisoft folder next to my stock 4.09m game and both are playable.

The stock game I launch from the normal "IL-2 Sturmovik 1946" desktop icon.

The modded game I launch ( whichever version of the 1.1 game I want ) via the switcher icon within it. ( moved it to desktop ) Curiously, that switcher never did work for me before when the 1.1 game was my only game. Now it works. Go figure :???:

I don't mean to hijack this thread, but I am attempting the same thing. I have 4.08 on my first install, and just copied the IL2exe to a new folder on my desktop. Creating a new one that will hold the UI. Once there, I apply UI 1.1, and then 1.1.1. (I'll install 1.2 later) I double click my new exe and the cursor flashes a little bit, but after that, nothing. Where did I go wrong?

When I first tried this, I didn't realize not to rename the exe and so I deleted it and started over, making sure only to copy the exe from my IL2 root folder.

Thanks for the help.

Can you use the switcher to launch the game? You double click it and then you should see a menu of 6 choices ( in either 1.1 or 1.2 ) which you select the various choices of 4.08 or 4.09b ( modded or no, TIR 6 DOF or no ) with 2 buttons below, asking if you just want to switch, or switch and run.

Nope, can't use the switcher to get it running. I hit switch and run, after choosing 4.08 with mods and then nothing.

Maybe I could try 4.08 no mods, but if one didn't work, I'm not too sure the other will.

Unless...

When making my new folder, I only copied the exe, and maybe the game needs more than that to run the game. If I copied the entire IL2 root folder I may get it to work.

Edit: It works now! Thanks for the help! I have both 4.08 (main) and UI now.
