MAP ag_Aleutians - update to version 2.0

chopperman Wrote:Hi Agracier,
I've downloaded your very promising Aleutians map, but in the rar file I didn't find the "Mbug_sk_ForestFar_Hiver.tga" texture. So the map does not appear in the FMB.
Could you be so kind to tell me where I can find it ?
Thank you

It is a texture that should be a standard install with UI 1.2 or UP 2.0 or HSFX I think. It is in any case a texture that is part of the Slovakia Winter map. If you are missing this one, chances are you will turn out to be missing other textures as well as I used these excellent winter textures to a great extent.

If you can find a download for the Slovakia Winter map, you should be all right after installing.

If you can't find anything, let me know ...

Thanks Agracier,

I do not use the "big compilations" like UP or HSFX, because, as an offliner, prefer to build manually my little compilation of mods (SAS docet).

As for your suggestion I've downloaded the Mbug Slovakia winter map and I've found the missing texture.

Problem SOLVED. Thanks again and congratulations.

Now that i'm finishing Kyushu i have time to take a closer look to your maps and kapteeni's too.

This map is really really nice, it's a real fun to fly it, the way it is populated is very realistic and over the mountains i can feel the cold on my hands  Smile

Thanks for the map. I have 2-3 constructive suggestions to improve the map and make it render closer to this part of the world, i will post that later....but now if i may here are some screen shots. Once again thanks for the map Wink

I am playing Cracken's Aleutians campaign now. It is great; I highly recommend it.

Agracier, check this.

i was exploring aleutian territory via Googl Eartth and found this. it's a little part of the map with better textures than the rest of the google map. it could be very useful to create better textures for your aleutian map.

i think it's possible to make more natural textures than those we have now. there is for exemple things to do to improve the way the colour of the chestnut ground change into snow in order to have a better transition. the winter textures you use are good but too contrasted compared to your chestnut textures.

i can send you coordinates if you can't see it on the pic. Aleutian map on google earth suffered of bad texture quality....i hope google guys will update one day this part of the world.
it's very little part of the map, but there is enough diversity in terms of texture to completly describe the aleutians landscape and mineralogy. It would be very easy for me to ad more snow, or delet it in order to have differents levels of intestity.

By the way...I have 2 free weeks now, i would be able to work at 100% on maps...i could produce very quickly a set of textures for this map. let me now if you are interrested for having an alternative set of textures.

Hi redko like I said in my PM of some while back, with Agracier's permission I've been working on this map to bring it up to historical accuracy, and it needs more than just a different brown.
As far as the ground goes there is a lot of green - the brown is only on the highest mountains. If the snow cover is retained then hardly any of the brown is visible - depends what time of year you want, I suppose. My research shows snow down below 500m in June 42; it was obviously a colder year than we've had recently. I'll be interested in any textures you come up with though, what I really need is something better for the snow edge where it meets the muskeg.

Now there's a right and proper Unalaska, NAS Dutch Harbor and Fort Mears! Are you using the original agracier map? Based on changes I see to Iliuliuk Bay and the harbor area, it looks substantially reworked? Best of luck on your re-work.

Yes, using Agracier's original map, but the coast around Unalaska/Dutch Harbor had to be redrawn a bit. I am basing the Eastern half of the map on June 42 and the western on Jan-Aug 43.
My map and Agracier's original will co-exist side by side. By making mine historical it severely reduces the number of airfields. My map will be for the historical campaign and coop mission-builders; Agracier's will work much better for online dogfights.

Because of the times periods and weather conditions of those times I am not aiming to reduce the snow cover by very much - some pictures of April 43 have snow down to sea level on Adak. Although I've created a grey mud texture that seems rather appropriate!

Yes, they might be well worth a look. If you want to try for a 'summer' look; i.e. less snow, on the original map I'll see what can be done with the low ground on mine. One of the problems I have found is that the original brown texture is a Water texture - Water 3 (RGB 31) - in the original load.ini. Thus the 'shore' extends halfway up the mountain sides. Any removal of snow is going to result in a lot of retexturing, which is another reason for me keeping the snow line down low.

Gentleman I have slight problem-map does show propely in FMB-but-no matter what I do-I can not get to play&fly-just pressing play in FMB and nothing happens.Of course everything is saved, plane is on the runway or floatplane in the water with proper waypoints etc-Am I missing something? I have alle textures required. I don't know what more should be wrong?

It sounds like you are missing some objects that are part of this map.
That seems the most common problem nowadays with the latest maps unfortunately.

Try Zipzapp's static.ini checker and it will tell you which object you miss.
Let us know which object you miss and somebody can tell you where to find and d/l it.
