Why Slovakia map is so sluggish??
#1

I hope this is the right section to post this message.. anyway, why everytime I fly over any bigger city of Slovakia my framerate drops so embarassingly? The game is normally running at a steady 60fps, but not when slovakian cities are in view.
I have an Nvidia GeForce 8800GS, which has always performed flawlessly in perfect mode.
It's a shame cos the slovakia map is by far the most detailed and better looking of all IMHO.. any ideas/suggestions?

There was a post awile back by a IL2 team member that specifically talked about that map (can not remember which website at the moment) and the low FPS.

His comments basicly boiled down to this, "it is not the amount of objects on a map, but the amout of DIFFERENT objects on the map that effect FPS". He said you could have a 1,000 buildings and it would not really effect your FPS if all the buildings were only one or two different types. It's when you have a lot of different types of buildings in that 1,000 that your FPS goes way down and the cities of Slovakia have a lot of different buildings, so your FPS suffer on that map.

I'm not really sure that's the case.

Once when making the Chaco map, I got carried away placing trenches around a city. They looked great and I kept on extending the lines wider and wider, made 3 concentric rings of trenches and all with just a few different objects ...

But dang if the frame rate didn't drop so low that it was impossible to fly at all, even with a quadcore and the new extended memory mod installed ...

There must be more to it than simply the type of object. Large numbers of objects, no matter how diverse or not, will slow down your frame rates ... I think that the density per area also plays a role and the magnification of the pilot view. Fly over a city with full zoom on and rates will drop compared to when zoom is fully extended.

Now that implies that when fewer objects are in view, but magnified, that the frame rate will be slower than with more objects in view but with less detail ...

So a lot of this seems contradictory I know, but that is the way I experience the frame rates in Il-2.

Variety of objects is only one of the factors. More here:
