Unofficial CSAAF Library

This is a Confederate States Army Air Force library of templates which I'll add to as I complete them. Entirely fictional, unofficial, and not compulsory in any way. However, for those who would like to avail themselves of these templates, here are some ground rules...

1 - The original markings are painted over USAAF roundels. It consists of a red circle with a blue and white cross.

2 - Following combat experience the blue cross is deleted, leaving a roundel consisting of a red circle with a white cross.

3 - Mid war markings (bearing in mind the high degree of similarity in equipment between opposing forces and the ready utilisation of captured airframes) is also painted over in the same area, consisting of a red bar with a red circle and white cross.

4 - The triangle is retained for Volunteer Wings and the Louisiana Group

5 - Standard fin/rudder markings are the red and white bars (as postulated by RAF_Loke). Air force groups use state identifications on the tail where available.

6 - Added option for red & white late war invasion stripes (Should be used instead of roundels.

CSA?? Oh, no - it is more like very weird Austria-Hungary. The tails are Austrian, the wings appear to be Hungarian...

Perhaps a Confederate battle flag would have been better, if you are obssessed with adding CSAF to the game...

This has nothing to go with history. And even if it had - still you need at least a map of Virgnia, Tennessee etc. Or will general U.S. Grant lay seige to St. Petersburg in Russia instead of Petersburg in Virginia?

No, I'm not obsessed, I can take or leave it. However, the CSA is also probably the most 'real' of the fictional air forces bandied around (is that a good way to put it) but also one that's popular for idealism rather than creative content. What I'm doing is really just a drop in the ocean. If there's no support or interest from the community, then so be it, I'll let it die a death. On the other hand, if people really do want to see a CSAAF in the game then it needs to become 'an air force', not a fantasy with bright flags all over it.

As for the 1860's history, that's all well and good, but entirely irrelevant to the 1940's. In any case, in theory the CSA might be involved in foreign wars too (though I must concede the mindset of the south makes it more likely it would stay at home Wink )

You see, I'm not saying I know everything about the confederacy and everything it implies - hardly, being a patriotic brit - but then again, the Confederacy has an interesting aura. That rebeliousness, and in particular, the willingness to stand up for what it believed in, however diluted the original 1860's sentiment actually was, yet still provoked a war, is something that I can sympathise with.

There's nothing to stop this mini-genre being added to by others if they want to get involved. Okay, US maps might be useful, but IL2'ers are more imaginative that surely? It's a bit of fun after all.

If anyone doesn't regard my paltry efforts as 'american enough', well, so be it, but I challenege them to come up with a better recognition symbol (which is what a roundel is) rather than a complicated flag that would keep mechanics so busy painting the war would over before the planes left the hangar Big Grin I guarantee, everything you think of will look like something already existing.

it's a very interesting idea, I have to admit.

Imagine though Royalist vs Parliamentarian airforces! I guess the RAF would unsurprisingly stay the same; but it would be interesting as to how Parliament might have painted up its aircraft...

Annoying the annoying, so you don't have to.

Nothing against anybody's fancies. You may even have Caesar's legionnaires flying Macchis 202 against Vercingetorix's Gauls in Ms-406s. Ha ha.

If I had to choose a Confederate skin, I would prefer this one

I got to know the idea of adding CSA into game is a bit older...

You may get Robert. R. Lee's P-38 here. (However, with different roundels than yours.)

Both existing templates have been upgraded with an option for late war red & white invasion stripes to be used in place of roundels.

The St George would imply a right wing parliament given modern sentiment, whereas typically a breakaway parliament would seem more likely to have socialist roots. We did vote one in a while back, I seem to remember Tongue

Ah well you're right there -- I hadn't considered modern connotations.

Indeed. That's the premis for taking out as much blue as possible. Combat experience shoes that in the heat of the moment people focus on a part of the detail, something that gets through our perceptive haze and registers as this or that. In other words, we glance and take in only so much information. Chimpanzees are very good at this. We're not. It's just the way our brains are wired up.

I did only really consider a civil war situation against the north. If you want a CSAAF action against the Japanese, then why not simply erase the red? Use white crosses and stripes to indicate nationality? That's the sort of refinement in symbology that went on in WW2.

While we're at fictional alternative timelines, what do you think how would the USSAAF markings look like?
