intermitten tracer

no, not intermitten tracer smoke, but rather no more tracer fire visible but with hit impacts. can this be done, or has it been done? and if it has been done where can it be found?

in the UP, they made the tracers a lot dimmer, which is the only thing i know of.

history for the most part. I came across some descriptions of a squadron in the Pacific theater that saw their kill count go up after they switched from tracer ammo to no tracer ammo. And secondly there's a combination of guncams where you'd see the occasional tracer and not a stream of them like now, combine that with the fact that only the last 5 seconds on nearly all machine guns were an indication to a pilot that he was running out of ammo.

I guess I'm looking for something like that.

Maj. Leonard "Kit" Carson ordered his squadron not to use tracers for two valid reasons:

1) they give a false impression of distance
2) they show the enemy your position

he said that when you hit a target with your 6 .50cal you could well see the sparks and flashes, and to him that was enough. He was not a big fan of deflection shooting, but IMHO the ballistics of the .50cal are ideal for that, far better than any other ammunition of WW2.
Some pilots had just one machinegun loaded with tracers, this to allow adjusting your aiming but without giving too much visibility to the enemy.
There were several schools of thought regarding the use of tracers, and to be honest I'd not use em on German planes, but they help a lot in deflection shooting with Allies planes and fixed gunsights. The introduction of gyro gunsights makes the use of tracers completely superfluous.

I know the question has been asked before. I dont think any mod was ever made. The train of thought was even if it had been made, only you would see the change. So that was the end of the online players asking for it. But still I would have liked to seen one. I like the idea of no tracers till the last second or two of burst fire. But I play mostly offline and I do see the disadvantage of using that online if only I could not see the tracers.

Edit: But then again, if an enemy plane, bomber or fighter, AI or real person was following you and you did see a burst of tracers, then you would know they were out of ammo. So such a mod would mabey face some controversy, as it would almost be seen as a advantage by some ppl.

I still like the idea.

DT has given us the ability to choose our own tracer loadout options in the 4.09 patch. Specifically, on the Dutch Fokker the player can select tracers for only one gun, firing in a continuous stream, as a pose to peppering.

This would be complicated in Allied planes which carry bombs. That would mean double or triple the loadout options for each tracer and ordinance combination.

Still, there is hope to see this in the future, especially if DT allows.

You can remove the smoke lines from the tracer, but a full-on mod would be needed to completely remove the tracer Wink

This is a quite interesting and very valid idea - I'm no mod creator but I see how this could be quite amazing if implemented. If a player was able to select the type of tracer he desired between some basic options discussed like Regular, One gun, Last 50 rounds, None, etc it would certainly be well-received by the online community. That is, of course, assuming it could be done so that other players would see it too.

I have wanted this mod for a long time. Is there a way to just decrease some number in the file to lower tracers?

Tracers are hardcoded into the aircraft ammo loadouts - weapon class files - if i'm not mistaken.

And as far as I know, there is a strict policy here that is against (stock) weapon class files editing.

But there might also be some good news; there are various mods around that actually change the visual design of the tracers.
If you had not found them already, i'll name a few:

- JG2_Rainer_Zufall's tracers ( (The link is inoperative) )
- VpMedia's tracers ( http://www.vpmedia.eu/il2/index.html )
- Jaypack44's tracers ( viewtopic.php?t=10958&highlight=tracer )
- Eexhaton's tracers ( viewtopic.php?t=23563&highlight=tracer )

I haven't looked into the files, but I strongly suspect this is achieved by swapping out the gun itself, one gun with tracers, another separate gun without. Obviously that is a no go for stock aircraft, and I question it really being an appropiate mod for new aircraft other than nightfighters (where no tracer loadouts would be the norm, rather than the exception).

Okay. I'm an idiot. So simple. Here:

http://www.filefront.com/15473529/AKD_Noseeums_1.01.rar

Now you won't see tracers, and no, you will not gain the online advantage you may be seeking. Wink Also, this will not effect the "pencil line" tracers that appear at far distance, but for normal shooting situations, you won't see anything.

edit: file updated.

Thanks akdavis but that isn't what I had in mind.

Eexhaton, just to clarify. What I want(ed) is to remove the tracers visually. you're sitting in that 'pit watching that sight, and you see impact strikes and muzzle flashes. Nothing else. to tinkering with ammo values, belt load outs and stuff like that.
