p-38 with a torpedo?
#1

ok i came across this web site scroll down to see the pics of the p-38 wit torps, but it was operational kinda as a test plane i think it flew 10 missions before they quit, but hey this plane is already there all you would have to do is change the carachtoistics to be able to hold torps, right?

but anyays it was operational, i might have to find my links on it all, but thets see what you think it will be cool.

RealDarko, those pics get me a little too excited. What engines are those? I've always wondered what a '38 could do with uprated engines.

Not exactly like the model, but I guess it will work for now.

I guess, those engines are the same like the Hellcat and Corsair, so that would be a P&W R2800 Double Wasp... Powerfull enough, I think

Here a quote from Wiki:
Quote:Lockheed proposed a carrier-based Model 822 version of the Lightning for the United States Navy. The Model 822 would have featured folding wings, an arresting hook, and stronger undercarriage for carrier operations. The Navy was not interested, as they regarded the Lightning as too big for carrier operations and did not like liquid-cooled engines anyway, and the Model 822 never went beyond the paper stage. However, the Navy did operate four land-based F-5Bs in North Africa, inherited from the USAAF and redesignated FO-1.

What about this late war version?

Will be great to have this version into the game, but being a what if, the chances are very low.

Well, while the Trident is an interesting concept, it has absolutely no historical counterpart. On the note of the Lightning on pontoons, the design show is the early design. The later design was to have the upraised tail that was actually tested to prevent corrosion of said structure. The more interesting variants that have as of yet to be modeled are the P-38K-LO and the P-38M-LO. The P-38M-LO is the well known Night Lightning. The P-38K-LO is the highest performing Lightning ever made as it was a streamlined version that wasn't produced due to disagreements with the Army. If you want to go "what-if" for the late war, I would suggest making a "P-38R." While there is no actual variant by this designation, there was this idea posted by somebody around here a while ago. The basic concept is to take the P-38K-LO airframe and install Merlin engines as Lockheed wanted for this model. Since this would have probably happened late in the war, the wings would have most likely been clipped like other late war fighters including the P-47N-RE and full bubble canopy would have been used. It would have been a useful escort alongside the P-47N-RE, P-51H-NA, and the P-82B-NA. Great ideas here... I just thought I would give a different perspective.

I think what you mentioned "streamlined version" that's actually the XP-49, Hyper Engine driven one, which was a quite different aircraft anyway.

The P-38K was actually a G model with new Allison engines and Hamilton Standard "High Activity" paddled propellers. Only built one or two. The Army pigheads didn't want to stop the Lockheed's production lines for 2 or 3 weeks while they make the retooling for the new - K - model. Real shame...

As for the "What-if", we already have a naval Yak-3!!! Ouch! (nice one, but far from reality)

Okay, I finally figured out how to make the 1MB sized pics for you guys to d/l. Just right click on the photo and select save as and make sure you save it in BMP format and drop it in your P_38G-15-LO folder and you can use it in game.
